Safety Services introduces the Safety Professional Network Training Fund for staff at UCL
6 June 2025
Safety Services has launched fully funded health and safety qualifications for staff with health and safety responsibilities, strengthening our safety culture across UCL.

The Safety Services team recognises the invaluable contribution of the university's safety professionals and is committed to supporting their development. The Safety Professional Network (SPN) Training Fund empowers staff with health and safety responsibilities to develop their knowledge and practice through free access to industry recognised qualifications.
Introduced in December 2024 by Safety Services, the SPN has been welcomed particularly by the Department Safety Officer community. They have embraced this much-needed opportunity, addressing the need for fully funded, accredited professional development opportunities which enable safety professionals to network and improve safety practices whilst contributing to a stronger safety culture across UCL.
Making a difference: a UCL Story
One such person to take advantage of this opportunity is Louise Phillips (Building and Safety Assistant Manager at the Bartlett School of Architecture), who recently completed her NEBOSH General Certificate through the fund. She says:

"I've worked in health and safety for most of my career, so I was really keen to gain the NEBOSH General Certificate. This helped improve my awareness and gave official recognition of my existing knowledge. I passed a couple of months ago and I've already put my learning to good use by adding information to our departmental safety hub and improving our Maternity Risk Assessments. It's given me an appetite for further learning, and I'll be taking some more health and safety courses in the future."
Our commitment to safety professionals
The fund supports a range of qualifications to meet different career stages and needs, ensuring UCL staff have access to the best possible training:
- IOSH Managing Safely: This Level 2 qualification provides managers and supervisors with the knowledge and skills they need to effectively manage workplace safety, fostering a proactive safety culture within their teams.
- Level 3 NEBOSH General Certificate: A foundational qualification for those starting their career in health and safety, providing a broad understanding of key principles and practices.
- Level 6 NEBOSH Diploma (CertIOSH Membership): Designed for experienced professionals seeking career advancement, this qualification offers in-depth knowledge and skills, with a pathway to becoming a Chartered Safety and Health Practitioner.
- IOSH Executive Health and Safety: Tailored for senior leaders, this course provides a strategic overview of health and safety management systems, enabling them to champion safety at the highest levels of UCL..
The opportunity is open to all UCL staff with health and safety responsibilities. For more information, please visit the SPN Hub or email Shoab Iqbal (Safety Training Manager).
