12 December 2024

This safety alert concerns the use of Fisherbrand Motorized Pipet Controllers following a recent incident on campus.

What is the issue?

In November 2023, Thermo Fisher Scientific issued a product recall due to potential safety hazards during the charging of the Fisherbrand Motorized Pipet Controller. Recently, one of these devices experienced a battery failure at UCL resulting in an explosion. Fortunately, no injuries were reported.

The device was introduced to UCL by a new staff member who had previously used it at another institution. As a result, UCL did not receive the recall notice directly.

Action to be taken

  • Cease use immediately: If you have a Fisherbrand Motorized Pipet Controller, stop using it and quarantine the device.
  • Return the device: Contact your Thermofisher Scientific account manager to arrange for the safe return and disposal of the recalled device.
  • Do not attempt to repair or modify the device.
  • Do not leave items charging unsupervised: Especially for prolonged periods (such as overnight). This can lead to overcharging and battery damage.
