Working safely with ionising radiation

Three types of sources of ionising radiation are used at UCL - unsealed sources, sealed sources (radioactive material) and x-rays. There are different risks, requirements and procedures for each of these types and you need to understand those for the kind of source you will be using in order to keep yourself and others safe. Unsealed and sealed radioactive material containing Uranium, Thorium and Plutonium are classed as Nuclear Materials and are subject to additional accountancy and reporting requirements (see working with nuclear materials).
