Radiation Protection Supervisor (RPS)

For x-ray equipment:
RPS or X-ray Manager

Based in your faculty or department the RPS is your first point of contact for radiation advice.

The RPS can tell you what you need to do to get started. They will also know where to get personal monitors and what to do with the waste.

The Head of Department (HoD) appoints the RPS or X-ray Manager.

Duties of the Radiation Protection Supervisor (LR5)

To find the name of your RPS refer to your Departmental Responsible Persons Register (RPR)

You will need to log in to riskNET to access the RPR for your department

NB X-ray Managers are not in the RPR

Euratom Inventory Co-ordinator (EIC)

Based in your faculty or department the EIC is your first point of contact for Euratom advice.

The EIC can tell you what you need to do to get started working with Euratom substances (uranium/thorium) and what to do with the waste.

To find the name of your EIC refer to your Departmental Responsible Persons Register (RPR)

You will need to log in to riskNET to access the RPR for your department

Radiation Protection Officer (RPO)

The RPO based in Safety Services and is usually contacted through your Departmental RPS.

The RPO manages ionising radiations for all of UCL and can provide additional advice and guidance in radiation matters.

Duties of the Radiation Protection Officer (LR9)

To find the name of the UCL RPO refer to 'Contact UCL Safety Services'
Radiation Protection Adviser (RPA) / Radioactive Waste Adviser (RWA)

External adviser on radiation protection and radiation waste matters.

Currently based at UCLH and also provide dosimetry services to UCL (except Royal Free- dosimetry services provided by the NHS Trust).

Under the law must be consulted on certain matters to do with radiation protection.

Duties of the Radiation Protection Adviser /Radiation Waste Advisor (LR11)

The RPA can be contacted through your Departmental RPS or the UCL RPO
Approved Dosimetry Service by UCLH (except RF Medical School)

UCL uses the Dosimetry Service operated by the Radiation Physics Group in the Department of Medical Physics and Bioengineering, UCLH.

This service provides dose assessment from external radiations using OSLDs for whole body monitoring and TLDs for extremity monitoring. 

Assessment of thyroid uptake and advice on other forms of assessment of dose from internal radiations are also available.

Facilities Services Manager (Waste)

The Facilities Services Manager (Waste) provides waste services to UCL departments.

On the Bloomsbury Campus radiation waste can be dropped off monthly. Departments not on the Bloomsbury Campus can request a waste collection via Customer Services.
