Planning for and managing disasters and humanitarian crises through warning systems, resilience management, shelter and housing, disaster risk finance, micro-finance.
We investigate how to plan for and manage hazards and disasters through warning systems, alert solutions, shelter and housing, resilience management, supply chain management, and financial tools. The research and solutions integrate learning across academic disciplines, across tiers of government and practitioners, and are sensitive to inclusivity and accessibility concerns. We consider these on a range of scales from the individual up to international organisations. Our work includes organisational resilience and business continuity, financial solutions including microfinance, insurance, and creating frameworks for integrated risk management. We work closely with industry partners, NGOs and international organisations and provide independent evaluation of external projects.
Projects
UCL Warning Research Centre
The UCL Warning Research Centre (WRC) is a joint venture between the Department of Science and Technology Studies and the Department of Risk and Disaster Reduction focusing on all aspects concerning warnings for all forms of risks and disasters. It is unique in bringing together global expertise to explore the role of warnings in managing vulnerabilities, hazards, risks, and disasters.
UCL RDR Cascading Risks Research Group
The Cascading Disasters research group seeks to understand, assess, and mitigate the escalation of crises in the globally interconnected system. They consider different triggers such as extreme space weather, climate change, earthquakes or ash clouds, contextualising their interactions with the built environment and the social domains.
