The British Academy has awarded Dr Punam Yadav, Associate Professor in Humanitarian Studies and Director of the UCL Humanitarian Institute, £29,950 through their International Writing Workshops 2024 programme.

The funded project, titled 'Academic Publishing and Grant Writing Workshop for Early Career Scholars from the Global South working on the nexus between Peace and Conflict Studies and Humanitarian Studies', aims to strengthen the research capacities of Early Career Researchers (ECRs) from the Global South.

Dr Yadav will lead a diverse international team of academics from Brazil, South Africa, Ecuador, the Netherlands and Sweden. The project forms part of ongoing efforts to decolonise knowledge production and foster meaningful South-South and North-South research collaborations.

The initiative addresses how Peace and Conflict Studies and Humanitarian Studies often operate separately despite the reality that conflict, development and humanitarian situations are deeply interconnected in the Global South. The project recognises that addressing contemporary crises requires multifaceted approaches that bridge these academic divides.

The workshop will focus on enhancing participants' academic writing skills, publication strategies and grant application knowledge while providing publishing opportunities and strengthening international academic networks. The approach is grounded in principles of co-learning and reflexive practice to foster academic leadership among ECRs from the Global South.

The workshop team includes Dr Maíra Siman and Dr Victória Santos from the Pontifical Catholic University of Rio de Janeiro, Professor Alain Tschudin from Stellenbosch University, Dr Cécile Mouly from FLACSO Ecuador, Dr Rodrigo Mena from the International Institute of Social Studies and Dr Vanessa Masterson from Stockholm Resilience Centre.
