RDR Academic Presents Rainfall Risk Research at UK-India Climate Modelling Exchange
5 March 2025
Dr Shipra Jain was among a group of experts who convened in Shillong for the FCDO-supported knowledge exchange on AI-driven climate modelling for Northeast India.

The UCL Department of Risk and Disaster Reduction (RDR) was represented at the UK-India Knowledge Exchange Workshop on AI-based Climate Modelling Centre and Policy Making held in Shillong, Meghalaya on 19–20 February 2025.
Dr Shipra Jain, Lecturer in Meteorological Risks, delivered a presentation on "Worst case rainfall scenarios for India" during the technical session on UK best practices in AI-enabled climate modelling. The session was moderated by Joshua Bamford, Head of the Tech and Innovation Team at the British High Commission in India. Other UCL representatives included Professor Cian O'Donovan, Director of the Centre for Responsible Innovation, who spoke on responsible knowledge infrastructure.
The two-day workshop brought together experts from institutions including UCL, the UK Met Office, IIT Bombay and IIT Delhi to facilitate knowledge transfer aimed at developing advanced climate modelling for Northeast India, a region vulnerable to extreme weather events. Dr Jain also participated in a technical session with the Meghalaya State Government, presenting alongside experts from the UK Met Office, IIT Bombay and IIT Delhi.
The workshop is part of a six-month knowledge exchange project to enhance climate risk prediction capabilities in Northeast India through AI-enabled tools and methodologies. The initiative will help establish a Climate Modelling Centre at either the Indian Institute of Management Shillong or North-Eastern Hill University. The programme featured a site visit to the Mawrah Multipurpose Reservoir Project in East Khasi Hills, recognised as a model for integrated water resource management and community-driven environmental conservation efforts by the government.
