Dr Shipra Jain, Lecturer in Meteorological Risk at UCL’s Department of Risk and Disaster Reduction, has been appointed Vice Chair of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) World Weather Research Programme (WWRP).

The WWRP supports international collaboration to advance research that improves weather prediction and understanding of weather-related impacts on society, spanning timescales from minutes to months. The programme plays a critical role in supporting efforts to strengthen early warning systems and improve public safety and resilience in the face of extreme weather.

Dr Jain is an interdisciplinary researcher specialising in weather and climate extremes, particularly hydrometeorological events across Asia. Her research examines the physical mechanisms behind extreme events and how these can be better predicted using knowledge of climate variability and change. She has also worked in operational research to develop climate services tailored to user needs.

In her new role, Dr Jain will help steer the direction of the WWRP’s global research agenda. The programme’s goals include advancing Earth system research, improving early warnings for extreme weather events, and reducing uncertainties in forecasts. It also promotes collaboration across disciplines, engaging social scientists and early career researchers.

In addition to her academic and research work, Dr Jain is involved in several related international initiatives. She is a member of the WWRP Scientific Steering Committee and a co-liaison for the WWRP’s Sub-seasonal to Seasonal Applications for Agriculture and Environment (SAGE) project. She is also associated with the World Climate Research Programme’s (WCRP) My Climate Risk initiative.
