Why wait for things to go wrong?
By Myles Harris
Careers in the humanitarian / disaster sector may involve deployment to respond to crises. The risks associated with working in the field are significant. Lots of pre-deployment training involves learning about what to do when things go wrong. But, why wait and then react? Is it not better to reduce the risks beforehand?
Dr Myles Harris is a Lecturer (Teaching) in Risk, Disasters and Humanitarianism. Myles has a background in nursing and specialises in developing training to mitigate risks to health in the field. During this presentation, Myles will share some of his experiences of working in remote environments and how pre-deployment training contributed to mitigating risks to health. This presentation will also provide an overview of careers that prospective students may choose to pursue after graduating from the Department for Risk and Disaster Reduction.
