UCL Postdoc Appreciation Week 2019

3 September 2019

Professor David Price, Vice-Provost (Research) announces the launch of UCL’s first-ever Postdoc Appreciation Week, a celebration of the fantastic contributions made by our early-stage researchers, and ‘Postcard to a Postdoc’ campaign.

Thank you

I am pleased to announce that UCL will be taking part in National Postdoc Appreciation Week (NPAW) from 16-20 September. Launched a decade ago in the USA, NPAW focuses on sustainable improvements in the postdoctoral experience. In 2019, UCL will be taking part for the first time. The week long celebration of our early-stage research staff aims to raise awareness of postdoctoral researchers within the institution and recognise the vital contribution they make to research and innovation across the UK and around the world.

Get involved

This year’s events, which have been organised by the Innovation and Consultancy team (part of HR Organisational Development) in collaboration with colleagues across the university, offering a variety of ways for postdocs to get involved. For example, developmental sessions like Wednesday’s An Imposter Calls, a technology launch on Monday Introducing Inkpath and a Town Hall on Tuesday with me talking about the new Research Strategy.

Our flagship event, the Friday Conversation unconference, will take place at Bartlett’s Real Estate Institute at Here East. This interactive forum shaped by, and for early-stage researchers explores their experiences at UCL – the challenges and the joys – to directly influence the forthcoming Researcher Experience Strategy.

Show your appreciation

September kicks of the Postcard to a Postdoc appreciation campaign. The idea is simple. Throughout the month, we will be able to send specially designed postcards to early-stage researchers we work with at UCL, across the UK and around the world. It’s a great way to share your thanks and appreciation with colleagues who play a big part in making UCL the home of bold thinkers.

Lastly, a thank you from me to all the Principal Investigators enabling their postdocs to take part. When we talk about research leadership, it is examples like this that are a testament of our commitment to nurture, develop and celebrate those engaged with research.

So, as the new academic year begins, let’s take the opportunity to thank our early-stage researcher colleagues and recognise everything they do.  Take part and find out more by heading over to our Postdoc Appreciation Week site.
