How has the COVID-19 pandemic affected awareness of interspecies relations?

Human activity is increasingly disrupting natural habitats and ecosystems, leading to the intense alteration of patterns of interaction between species and thereby facilitating further spread of infectious diseases to humans, such as COVID-19.

This term’s first Environment Domain Early-career Network seminar will bring together researchers from across the arts and sciences to discuss to what extent the coronavirus pandemic has increased awareness of the cataclysmic effects of anthropogenic interference with natural systems on both humans and non-humans.

The event will form the second instalment in a series of seminars we are hosting to explore the overarching question: ‘How might the COVID-19 pandemic inspire the progress of contemporary sustainability efforts?’. In line with this, our aim will be to catalyse more effective responses in academia to challenge the breakdown of ecosystems and encourage more harmonious interrelations between humans and other species.

Each of our three speakers will present for around 10 minutes which will allow plenty of time for discussion.

Our presenters are as follows:

- Hermione Spriggs, PhD Research Student at UCL Anthropology/Slade School of Art.

- Isabel Fletcher, PhD Research Student at London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine.

- Ram Shergill, PhD Research Student at The Bartlett School of Architecture.

EDEN Policy Workshops

Want to know more about the world of policy-making and think about practical ways in which your work can feed in to it?
