USN PhD inaugural student conference 2025: Call for abstracts

The UCL Sociology Network PhD Group is delighted to announce its inaugural Sociology PhD Student Conference, taking place on Tuesday, 3rd June 2025 at University College London. This free conference is an exciting opportunity for you to share your research, insights, and ideas with peers and faculty in a supportive and engaging environment.   Don’t miss this chance to submit an abstract, contribute to the conversation and connect with your fellow PhD students!

Submission Guidelines
Like the PhD network itself, this call is open to doctoral students at any stage of their PhD (including recently completed PhDs) from any department in a UK university using or interested in sociological research and methods. The network embraces an open and flexible definition of sociology and welcomes submissions that speak to a wide range of themes across sociological research.

Our themes include (but are not limited to):
Cities, Spaces, and Mobilities

Culture, Media, and Society

Environment and society

Gender and sexuality

History, politics and policy

Inequalities and social justice

Public health, life course, medicine and illness

Social identities/social division

Science, Technology and Innovation

Sociology of Work and Economy

Sociology of Education

Race, Ethnicity and Migration

Methodological innovations

These themes are descriptive, not prescriptive. Please do still apply if your research is outside of these themes. We welcome submissions in the form of presentations, workshops and posters.

Submissions will be judged using the following criteria:

  1. Connection to sociological research, methods and practice
  2. Clarity of the research (presentation, poster, workshop)
  3. Originality and innovation

Closing dates for abstracts
5pm, 7 February 2025
You will be notified about the success of your submission in the last week of February.

How to submit your abstract
We invite abstracts of up to 200 words for consideration. The submission process is simple and takes place via an MS Teams form. Whether you want to deliver a traditional research presentation, present a poster, or run a workshop, we want to hear from you:
