Cross-Disciplinary Collaboration: Insights and Best Practices from Researchers, 30 May 2025

Curious about cross-disciplinary research? Wondering how collaborating with colleagues from different fields can enhance your work?
- A joint CSSD Phd/ECR Workshop

Friday, 30 May 2025
11am-3pm
Room 642, IOE, UCL

Join us for an engaging workshop designed for all UCL PhD and Early Career Researchers interested in collaborative social science! Alongside interactive small-group activities to help you build connections and skills, this event will feature a panel of academic staff who have successfully undertaken cross-disciplinary projects and will share best practices and insights on cross-disciplinary collaboration.

Our panellists are: Prof. Gabriella Viglioccho (Experimental Psychology), Prof. Wendy Sims-Schouten (Arts and Sciences), Prof. Andrew Barry (Geography), Dr Rachel Benchekroun (Social Research Institute) and Prof. Ilias Tachtsidis (Biomedical Engineering).

The goal of this workshop is to demystify what it takes to work at disciplinary crossroads. As cross-disciplinary collaboration becomes increasingly essential for tackling grand challenges and enhancing research impact, academics are required to acknowledge and navigate challenges and potential pitfalls. Together, we will explore when and how research can meaningfully cross boundaries and discuss practical strategies for forming productive collaborations across disciplines. These will include how to approach potential collaborators and develop research questions that connect different methodological traditions.

Next to answering questions that arise during the group activity session, our expert panel will engage in broader questions such as:

  • What value can cross-disciplinary approaches bring to your research?
  • How can you determine when collaborative approaches are most beneficial and how to design them?
  • What are potential challenges and limitations of working across disciplines?

All in all, the workshop offers a unique opportunity to explore new ideas, develop practical skills, and expand your professional network.
