Collaborative social science: establishing connections and looking forward

10am-11.30am, Wednesday, 19 May 2021

  • REGISTER for the event, which will be held on MS Teams
  • NB: You will receive a Teams meeting invitation via email shortly before the meeting takes place
  • This event will not be recorded but the organisers will circulate a summary of key points to registrants after the meeting

An essential first step in collaborative social science is establishing connections with other researchers and stakeholders around shared interests and motivations. This introductory event will allow us to share effective strategies for developing our networks, particularly in a time where normal routes (such as attending conferences) have been disrupted. The ECR coordinating group welcomes you to our first event of the year and looks forward to hearing more about how collaborative approaches could benefit your research.

All early career colleagues are warmly invited to this event by UCL's Collaborative Social Science Domain Early Career Network. We’ll introduce the domain and co-ordinating group to ECRs across the University, setting out our goals and plans for the year. Together we’ll reflect on key challenges that we face in generating and doing collaborative social science research as ECRs. We will share effective strategies for developing collaborations online and plan next steps together. The event will be interactive with ample opportunities for you to expand your network and to discuss how collaborative research may benefit your work and career.

The event is designed for Early Career Researchers across UCL who:
•    have an interest in collaborative research
•    consider their research to benefit from interdisciplinary or collaborative methods
•    would like to help shape what training and activities the network provides moving forward as we build a supportive early career community

Agenda
1. Introduction

The coordinators will introduce the Domain, our plans for the year & survey findings.

2. What motivates your (collaborative) research?
Get to know each other through a creative activity.

3. Connecting online for collaborations
What’s worked for you? What are you stumped by? A chance to discuss our experiences and questions about online networking, how it works at UCL and in different contexts.

4. Next steps
Shape what we do next as a network – peer support, discussion groups, a manifesto…?

For the event:
•    Please have a pen & paper to hand
•    For the discussion of connecting with others online to build collaborations, please think about one question and one reflection that you'd like to share
•    Feel free to bring ideas for the network's next steps or just to comment on suggestions on the day
