Mental Health Research UK PhD Competition 2027 | UCL Deadline: 15 April 2026

Scope

Mental Health Research UK (incorporating the Schizophrenia Research Fund) is inviting applications for 4 PhD Scholarships for the 2027/28 academic year. Scholarships are available in the following areas:

  1. Karen Menzies MHRUK PhD scholarship: Developing and validating novel biomarkers for schizophrenia and related psychotic conditions
  2. Karen Menzies MHRUK PhD scholarship: Childhood neuro-developmental antecedents for schizophrenia and related psychotic conditions
  3. John Grace QC MHRUK PhD scholarship: Antecedents, causal factors, clinical characteristics, treatments and outcomes of peri-menopausal first-onset psychosis and related psychotic conditions
  4. Clair Chilvers MHRUK PhD scholarship: Risks, benefits and opportunities of artificial intelligence (AI) tools in mental health care

Applications are invited from prospective supervisors or supervisory teams (eligible PIs and Co-Is) based at UK universities. Once an award has been made, the supervisors will select a student with support from the Mental Health Research UK trustees.

Awards cover fees and stipend only, based on the Medical Research Council’s minimum stipend and fees for UK students.

AMS Springboard | UCL deadline: 9 April 2026

Scope

The Academy of Medical Sciences (AMS) Springboard Award supports biomedical (non-clinical) researchers at the start of their first independent post who have yet to receive substantial funding to help launch their research careers.

Proposals are accepted across the breadth of biomedical research, including molecular, cellular and structural biology, anatomical, physiological, psychological, epidemiological, and public health research. Applications from researchers using mathematical, physical, or engineering approaches are also eligible, provided the research aims to improve human health.

IUK SNPN 5G Assured Integration (CR&D) |  Funder deadline: 1 April 2026

Scope

In this call, UK-registered organisations can apply for a share of up to £18.5 million to integrate UK-anchored advanced connectivity components at a system level into technically assured, end-to-end architectures ready for early market evaluation. This competition aims to overcome the system-level integration gap that prevents high-value UK advanced connectivity components from forming complete, procurable solutions.

IUK Semiconductors and components for smart electronic platforms |  Funder deadline: 1 April 2026

Scope

In this call, Innovate UK will invest up to £18.5 million for CR&D and R&D projects working on maturing and accelerating the availability of components that include semiconductors or novel technologies, required to deliver Smart Electronic Platforms. This competition aims to drive forward the availability of a UK-anchored catalogue of components, ready for integration and delivery into next-generation smart electronic platforms. The target sectors for these platforms will be across industrial and tactical edge environments for automation and autonomy.

As UCL can only collaborate on a limited number of applications, an internal coordination process has been put in place.

EPSRC Fundamental AI Research Lab | Funder deadline: 31 March 2026

Update: The UCL-led proposal is progressing in collaboration with Edinburgh, Oxford and Cambridge. At UCL, Computer Science (FES), Statistical Science (MAPS), the Gatsby Computational Neuroscience Unit (FLS) and ARC (Advanced Research Computing) will form the first phase. DSIT and UKRI currently advise that proposals should focus on fundamental AI. If funded, the second phase - planned to begin in May 2026 - will offer opportunities for broader involvement.

Scope

The EPSRC Fundamental AI Research Lab call offers funding to create a new UK research lab focused on advancing the foundations of artificial intelligence (AI). It aims to strengthen the UK’s global position in developing the core science underpinning novel fundamental AI methodologies and approaches, exploring breakthroughs in how AI systems learn, reason, and adapt. Funding covers an initial 18-month research phase plus long-term training support (£8million), with potential extension to a 6-year programme (£32million).

NIHR Global Health Research Professorships (Round 9) | UCL deadline: 31 March 2026

Scope

The Global Health Research Professorship is the National Institute for Health and Care Research’s (NIHR’s) flagship career development award. It is designed to support research leaders by promoting the effective translation of research into practice and strengthening research leadership at the highest academic levels.

The programme supports outstanding academics to work at a professorial level, funding researchers whose work is intended to specifically and primarily benefit people in Low- and Middle-Income Countries (LMICs) eligible for Official Development Assistance (ODA). The scheme is open to all disciplines across health, public health, social care research, and research methodology.

These details are based on the last round and are subject to change when the next round opens in April 2026.

Scope

IUK Robotics Adoption Hubs |  UCL deadline: 5 March 2026

Scope

In this Innovate UK call, UK-registered organisations can apply for a share of up to £38 million for creating one-stop shops to help end-users adopt robotics and autonomous systems with expert guidance.

This competition aims to bridge the knowledge gap to impact productivity, safety and growth, and deliver public benefit through accelerating the adoption of robotics. Hubs will be located within a region, may have single or multi-end user sector focus, and are expected to build on strengths and capabilities within the existing ecosystem.

Philip Leverhulme Prize | UCL deadline: 4 March 2026

Scope

The Philip Leverhulme Prize recognises early career researchers who have made a significant international impact and show exceptional promise for future research. The Prizes support outstanding research scholars who have made and continue to make original, significant contributions to their field.

No institution may submit more than three nominations in any subject area, for which reason a central selection process has been put in place.

For the 2026 competition, the subject areas are:

  • Biological Sciences
  • History
  • Law
  • Mathematics and Statistics
  • Philosophy and Theology
  • Sociology and Social Policy

The Leverhulme Trust usually award 5 prizes nationally in each subject area. Nominations are considered regardless of the nominee's departmental affiliation.

AHRC Creative Industries Clusters | Funder deadline: 3 March 2026

Scope

The UKRI Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC) Creative Industries Clusters programme brings together universities, businesses, local and regional policymakers, and private funders to drive research, innovation and growth in the creative industries. Led by UK universities, the clusters create research and development (R&D)‑driven commercial opportunities, strengthen regional capabilities, and deliver real‑world impact.

AHRC is now inviting outline applications for Creative Industries Clusters: Round Two. Funding will support projects that:

  • Broaden the geographical reach of the clusters portfolio, enabling new regions to benefit from hosting a cluster or expanding the model into sub‑sectors and challenges not addressed previously
  • Contribute to the delivery of the UK Creative Industries Sector Plan objectives (growth, skills and wider impact)
  • Generate economic growth and social and cultural benefits, including protecting existing jobs and creating new ones
  • Create an ecosystem for new and experimental creative content, products, services and experiences
  • Generate long‑term strategic applied research partnerships between creative enterprises, higher education institutions (HEIs), and other sectoral or local stakeholders
  • Improve creative businesses’ access to the skills, knowledge and expertise they need to develop innovative products and services, including through training and skills development

IUK Robotics Adoption Programme skills development |  UCL deadline: 2 March 2026

Scope

This is a call for proposals to create and deliver course content and materials that will support skills, talent and training in robotics. This competition is part of a £52 million Robotics Adoption Programme. It is designed to complement and feed into a new network of Robotics Adoption Hubs. The aim is to bridge the skills gap to address the lack of skilled workers able to specify, procure, integrate, operate and maintain robotics. £2.5M is available, and applications can come from all registered organisations including universities.

AHRC Design Generators | UCL deadline: 18 February 2026

Scope

The UKRI Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC) Design Generators call offers funding for innovative, design-led research projects that contribute to the green transition. Projects should generate new arts and humanities-based approaches that harness design to address environmental sustainability, decarbonisation, circular economies, policy design, and regenerative practices. 

Funding will support projects that:

  • Co-develop interventions with a non-academic partner to support sustained impact beyond the grant
  • Collaborate with communities or stakeholders to ensure relevance to lived experience
  • Promote behaviour change through policymaking, regulation, or ‘nudging’
  • Demonstrate the value of academic design research in tackling locally relevant, real-world challenges on the path to net zero
  • Projects need to include a non-academic partner listed as a co-investigator (subject to eligibility) and engage with Future Observatory throughout the lifetime of the project. 

The AHRC is investing £1million to fund 5-6 awards nationally. As UCL can only submit 2 applications as the lead institution, an internal coordination process has been put in place.

This is the first of 2 rounds taking place in 2026.

Internal selection process

If more than 2 EOIs are received, a prioritisation process will be initiated. A panel convened by our Research Coordination team will meet shortly after the UCL deadline to review submissions. Applicants will be informed of outcomes around the end of February 2026, or sooner if a panel is not required.

A budget is not required for the EOI form. However, due to the short turnaround, departments may wish to secure approval and draft a rough costing. Applicants should contact their departmental research support staff for advice.

EPSRC Reimagining Circularity: Outline Stage | Deadline: 15 January 2026

Scope

The UKRI Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) and Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) have pre-announced the Reimagining Circularity outline-stage call.

Proposals are invited to establish a NetworkPlus that will build new capacity, strengthen communities, and enhance research to innovation capabilities focused on the circular economy in 1 of the following priority areas:

  • Built environment
  • Textiles
  • Data and metrics

EPSRC and Defra will fund 3 NetworkPlus investments - 1 in each priority area - to foster collaboration and knowledge exchange across research and stakeholder communities. Successful teams will need to adopt an interdisciplinary or transdisciplinary approach (or both), including industrial partners.

  • Funding: up to £5.41million FEC (EPSRC will fund 80% FEC for up to 36 months)

UKRI Future Leaders Fellowships Round 11: Pre-announcement of UCL process | UCL deadline: 14 January 2026

Scope

UK Research and Innovation's (UKRI) Future Leaders Fellowships (FLF) scheme provides funding for up to 7 years to develop, retain, attract, and sustain research and innovation talent in the UK, foster new research and innovation career paths, and offer long-term, flexible funding to tackle challenging and novel challenges.

Round 11 of the UKRI FLF scheme will open on 2 February 2026, as confirmed in their pre-announcement. The information below outlines UCL’s internal process for managing applications to the scheme to support planning.

  • Career stage: Early-career researchers and innovators looking to transition to independence
  • Funding: No limit - requests should be appropriate to the project (previous projects have ranged from £300,000-£2,000,000)

The scheme requires substantial commitment from UCL as the host institution. Potential internal and external applicants are advised to contact the relevant department first to register their interest in this scheme and discuss support. Expressions of Interest (EOI) cannot be submitted without agreement from the relevant Head of Department.

Internal selection process

1. Department stage

Internal applicants should submit an internal EOI form using the internal applicant submission platform. External applicants should submit an EOI via the external applicant submission platform and send a copy to ovpr.beams@ucl.ac.uk for consideration by the relevant UCL department.

2. Faculty stage

Faculties will shortlist candidates within their allocated cap. Applicants should speak to their department for information on the shortlisting process.

3. UCL central stage

Faculty nominations should be submitted via email to ovpr.beams@ucl.ac.uk by 4pm, 6 February 2026. Nominations should be submitted by the Faculty Research Manager or Vice-Dean for Research (or named deputy). Nominated candidates will be invited to submit their application by 12noon on 23 February 2026. The central UCL panel will meet at the end of March 2026, and outcomes will be sent to candidates at the end of March/early April 2026. Selected candidates will need to submit their proposals to UKRI by 16 June 2026.

BBSRC 2025 Transformative Research Technologies (25TRT) | UCL deadline: 8 January 2026

Scope

This UKRI Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRC) funding opportunity aims to support the development of cutting-edge research technologies with the potential for transformative impact in biosciences research. Eligible projects may include bioinformatics tools and computational approaches capable of achieving significant advances and redefining current research capabilities.

Awards will support small, short, early-stage studies focused on the development of innovative technologies with the potential for substantial future impact.

EPSRC Turing AI Global Fellowships | UCL deadline: 10 December 2025

Scope

The UKRI Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) invites applications for the Turing AI Global Fellowships scheme, aimed at exceptional AI researchers currently based outside the UK. The scheme seeks to strengthen the UK’s position as a global leader in AI by attracting world-class talent.

Applicants should have been based outside the UK for at least 24 months before applying. UKRI encourages applications from a diverse pool of candidates, including those with non-traditional career paths or interdisciplinary backgrounds.

Fellows will work with their host institution to establish a highly skilled research team and deliver a transformational programme of AI research. Projects should advance AI methodologies either at a fundamental or theoretical level, or at the interface between AI and other disciplines. Proposals focused solely on applying existing AI methods are not eligible.

Fellows should have physically relocated to the UK, be considered a UK resident and academic employee (lecturer or equivalent) at the host organisation before the fellowship starts. Host institutions are expected to provide substantive long-term support beyond the funding period to attract and retain international talent.

Internal selection process

Heads of Department should notify our Research Coordination team of their intention to nominate a candidate, and provide the following information:

  • Candidate name and research area
  • Host department at UCL
  • Current affiliation
  • Confirmation of commitment to provide a substantial support package

Nominations should be sent by email to ovpr.beams@ucl.ac.uk by 12noon, 10 December 2025 at the latest. If more than 2 internal nominations are received, a prioritisation process will be put in place.

Institutional support

UKRI expects host organisations to provide strategic support beyond the fellowship period, enabling fellows and their teams to move toward a sustainable position. Institutional support for the delivery of the research programme may include access to PhD studentships and research staff, lab space, and access to facilities.

Host institutions are also expected to provide mentorship to support the fellow's transition to the UK and integration into the UK research community.

Support should reflect the fellow’s leadership role, enabling them to establish a competitive research programme in the UK that aligns with institutional strategic research initiatives and investments.

Leverhulme Trust Centenary Doctoral Scholarships | UCL deadline: 10 December 2025

Scope

The Leverhulme Trust Centenary Doctoral Scholarships scheme supports cohorts of doctoral students working in an interdisciplinary priority research area for an institution. Scope

The UCL Neuroscience Domain and Neuroscience Centre Zurich (ZNZ) Collaboration call offers short-term seed funding to support collaborative neuroscience research or networking initiatives. These awards are designed to support larger-scale applications for external research funding.

Funding may be used to generate preliminary data, support research staff, facilitate postgraduate exchanges, or enable short-term visits by group leaders to the partner institution. NERC Pushing the Frontiers of Environmental Science | UCL deadline: 25 November 2025

Scope

This UKRI Natural Environment Research Council (NERC) call offers funding to pursue an ambitious, high-risk, high-reward environmental science project. Proposals should address a significant environmental science question within the NERC's remit, and may be pure, applied, technology-led, or policy-driven. NIHR Clinical Future Leaders Fellowship | UCL deadline: 24 November 2025

Scope

The National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR) Clinical Future Leaders Fellowship (Cohort 1) is a 7-year career development award aimed at senior postdoctoral clinical academics, including doctors, dentists, and other registered health and care professionals. It offers funded research time and tailored leadership training to support the transition into research leadership roles.

Applicants should be nominated by their host organisation, which is expected to provide tapered salary support and an open-ended research position during or following the fellowship.

Internal coordination process

Senior academics across UCL are invited to submit thematic proposals to lead the institutional bid. Proposals should reflect UCL’s research strengths. The selected scheme will form the basis of UCL’s application to Wellcome.

EOIs will be assessed by the Vice Deans (Research) of the 4 Life and Medical Sciences (LMS) Faculties during the week commencing 27 October. A planning session to develop the proposal and engage consortium partners will follow from the week commencing 3 November.

EOIs should:

  • Demonstrate a clear intention to work across all 4 LMS Faculties, not a single Faculty or Department

  • Take into account the NHS Strategic Priorities
  • Propose a multi-institutional programme led by UCL, identifying potential external university partners whose strengths complement UCL's in the chosen theme

Programme Leads should:

  • Be senior clinical academics (of any clinical background) with a strong research track and international standing, with a record and experience as Principal Investigator (PI) on major grants

NERC Artificial intelligence (AI) for environmental science phase one | UCL deadline: 22 October 2025

Scope

The UKRI Natural Environment Research Council (NERC) is investing up to £12 million over five years to support research and innovation projects in data science and AI aimed at addressing complex environmental challenges. Projects should focus on one or more of the following priority areas:

  • Environmental hazards and human health
  • Terrestrial ecology
  • Oceans and climate

Applicants are encouraged to collaborate across disciplines and research communities to develop innovative, groundbreaking approaches and to engage with stakeholders from business, policy, the third sector, or other relevant sectors to maximise impact.

This funding will be delivered in 2 phases:

  • Phase 1 will support small-scale ‘pump-priming’ activities that are highly innovative, adventurous, and high-risk. Applications from consortia crossing disciplinary boundaries to develop and apply AI and data science to environmental challenges are strongly encouraged.
  • Phase 2 will be a closed call. Only projects funded in phase one will be eligible. The most promising, based on transformative outcomes and potential for high impact, will receive further funding for an additional 42 months.

This UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) call supports established from non-artificial intelligence (AI) disciplines to build domain-relevant AI capability and apply advanced AI approaches to address a challenge in their chosen field. This opportunity forms part of the UK Government’s AI Opportunities Action Plan. UKRI Nuclear Skills Doctoral Focal Award (DFA) | UCL deadline: 12 August 2025

Scope

UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) has launched a call for a Doctoral Focal Award (DFA) in Nuclear Skills. Led by Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) with involvement from other Research Councils, including the Natural Environment Research Council (NERC) and Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC), the scheme will support cohort-based doctoral training aligned with the UK’s civil and defence nuclear sectors, with the first student intake expected in autumn 2026. 

This DFA call differs from previous calls as only Home fee status students will be eligible, and there is a requirement for leveraged and matched funding. The initiative is part of the National Nuclear Strategic Plan for Skills, with funding from the Ministry of Defence and the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero, subject to the government’s spending review. The call will be open to both new and existing centres and aims to develop the next generation of researchers and innovators in nuclear science and engineering. Proposals are expected to address skills needs across the nuclear lifecycle, including but not limited to:

  • Reactor and detector system design
  • Construction and manufacturing
  • Operation and environmental monitoring
  • Decommissioning and waste management

Royal Society Faraday Discovery Fellowships - Accelerated International Route (Round 1) | UCL deadline: 7 August 2025

Scope

The prestigious Royal Society Faraday Discovery Fellowships support the most talented mid-career research leaders to undertake high-quality, original research. Established in 2025, the Accelerated International Route is intended for outstanding international researchers nominated by their host UK organisation. This route will run for 2 years.

Candidates are expected to have a strong track record of managing significant research grants and the potential to establish world-leading research groups in the UK. The scheme is designed to enable fast-tracked recruitment of exceptional candidates where this would be strategically advantageous to UK research.

Open to researchers currently based overseas and nominated by their prospective UK host institution, the scheme does not require a confirmed job offer at the time of application. However, successful candidates will need to hold a full-time, permanent contract at UCL before the award begins.

The scheme is intended for time-sensitive or strategically important appointments, and nominations should include a clear justification for using the accelerated route. EPSRC Canada-UK NetworkPlus in Semiconductor Research | UCL deadline: 21 July 2025

Scope

The Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) is looking to support a Canada-UK academic NetworkPlus in semiconductor research to share expertise in areas of mutual interest and seed future projects. The NetworkPlus should focus on joint research and developing strengths in compound semiconductors, photonics, NEMS/MEMS, advanced packaging and chip design. The NetworkPlus will be expected to strengthen Canada-UK relationships and deliver a roadmap and long-term vision for a larger-scale collaborative initiative in semiconductors.

UK Space Agency International Bilateral Fund Call 2 | UCL deadline: 11 June 2025

Scope

The UK Space Agency (UKSA) invites proposals for projects through the second iteration of the International Bilateral Fund (IBF) that will help strengthen the UK space sector’s international partnerships. The objectives of the IBF are to:

  • Build stronger relationships with international partnerships, cementing our place as a trusted space partner of choice
  • Contribute to economic growth by driving UK space sector inward investment and exports
  • Leverage international partnerships to develop priority UK capabilities.

Applications need to outline how the partnership will support both UK and international space sector priorities. UKSA has restricted the number of applications to 2 per lead organisation. This measure applies to all types of organisations, including industrial, academic and public sector research bodies.

Expressions of interest should be submitted to the BEAMS Research Coordination team via email at ovpr.beams@ucl.ac.uk by the internal deadline. The document (maximum 1 side A4, Arial font size 11) should summarise the proposed application and state how it aligns with the scope and objectives of the UKSA call. It should also describe how the proposal aligns with the research strengths and priorities of UCL. If more than 2 expressions of interest are received, a prioritisation process will be implemented by our Research Coordination teams in consultation with relevant faculty Vice-Deans (Research).

NERC Pushing the Frontiers of Environmental Research: July 2025 | UCL deadline: 12noon, 3 June 2025

Scope

Apply for funding to pursue an ambitious, high-risk, high-reward environmental science project.

Your research will need to address a significant environmental science question. This can include pure, applied, technology-led, or policy-driven research that addresses clearly defined scientific questions. Applications are welcome from individuals who demonstrate a capability to collaborate with experts from other disciplines to generate innovative research, as long as the research generally sits within NERC’s research areas.

An internal review process has been put in place for this call to monitor the quantity and quality of submissions.

Applicants will need to complete the Notification to Submit MS Form by 13 May, before submitting the Vision and Approach by 12noon on 3 June. See the timeline below for further information.

Researchers based in Earth Science, Geography or GEE should speak to their department about the local internal triage process and do not need to complete the intention to submit form. Submissions from staff based outside of these departments will go through the cross-disciplinary panel overseen by the Environment Domain. The panel will have a cap of up to 2 submissions per round for the July 2025 and January 2026 rounds. 

Timeline

  • Tuesday 13 May 2025: Notification to Submit form deadline. Project Leads will need to name an independent reviewer for their proposal. The reviewer should be informed in advance that the proposal review will need to be returned by 12noon, Wednesday 11 June.
  • 12noon, Tuesday 3 June 2025: Completed drafts of the Vision (1,100 words) and approach (2750 words) to be sent via email to Becca Burns at b.burns@ucl.ac.uk.
  • Week commencing 16 June 2025: Cross-departmental panel meeting to select submissions and feedback shared with applicants. Selected proposals will have Research Coordination support. Unsuccessful applicants will be able to meet with the Strategic Coordinator: Environment to discuss other funding options and receive further support. 
  • Tuesday 24 June 2025: All applicant names and Worktribe project numbers to be sent to Becca Burns at b.burns@ucl.ac.uk and shared with RIS Pre-Award.
  • Wednesday 16 July 2025: NERC submission deadline.
UKRI Creating opportunities: rethinking economic (in)activity | Deadline: 6 May 2025

Scope

UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) is inviting proposals for its ‘Creating Opportunities: Rethinking Economic (In)activity’ call. This initiative aims to boost economic activity in UK areas with high rates of ill health, disability, and informal care. Interdisciplinary proposals that cross multiple research council boundaries and use mixed-method approaches are especially welcomed.

Our Research Coordination teams held an internal roundtable on 26 February for interested UCL staff, chaired by Professor Rosalind Smyth. The meeting provided an overview of the call and UKRI's requirements and offered a platform for sharing ideas and fostering collaboration. To support UCL's response, applicants working on a bid are invited to submit an internal Expression of Interest (EOI) form. EOIs will help facilitate collaboration between UCL teams either planning to submit a bid or interested in contributing to a bid led by someone else.
