Bridging Bands for Guided Reading

Resourcing for diversity into Key Stage 2
Bickler, Baker and Hobsbaum (2003)

The 'dip in literacy achievement' that some children experience at age seven-to-eight may in part be due to a steep rise in text reading challenge that they encounter at this age. Bridging Bands for Guided Reading helps teachers guide pupils through this transition by listing nearly 2000 titles in a gradient of six colour bands. Each band is accompanied by two guided reading lesson plans and an indication of typical challenges children face at that level. The book also includes an introduction to reading development at this age, guided reading procedures and prompts, and advice on assessments.

Teachers may also be interested to read: Guiding Readers - Layers of Meaning, A handbook for teaching reading comprehension to 7-11 year-olds. Tennent, Reedy, Hobsbaum and Gamble (2016). The book is available to order from all good bookshops including online retailers. ISBN: 978-0-85473-690-4.
