Project: Sea Rescue, The Black Mediterranean, and Planetary Humanism
Jessica Breakey

Year of start: 2022
Supervisors: Prof Paul Gilroy (principal) and Prof Tariq Jazeel

PhD Research: The recurring scenes of humanity drifting and drowning in the Mediterranean basin guide my project's attempt to develop a vocabulary that responds to living and dying in relation to water. The themes of emergency and disaster extend beyond the Mediterranean waterways as I situate the shipwrecks saved and shipwrecks left as entangled within the concurrent processes that shape and transform the planet, threatening the possibility of enduring and shared life. I am interested in the processes, practises and outcomes of sea-rescue on the Mediterranean and consider the political and ethical implications and possibilities they evoke.
