Information for International Applicants

- What are the English language requirements?
A strong command of the English language is essential for the CDT programme. All CDT students must satisfy UCL’s English Language requirements, as detailed on the following web-page:
Please read the requirements on that page carefully. For the CDT you will need language qualifications at the “Standard Level”.
If you do not yet satisfy the requirements you may still apply to the CDT, but we strongly recommend that you gain an acceptable qualification as soon as you can. UCL is very strict about these criteria. Without satisfying the criteria, UCL cannot make a formal offer to you, and this may delay your visa application (if relevant) and prevent you from starting at UCL.
- What is my fee status?
The UK has different rules for fees and funding for applicants who qualify for EU fee status, and those who do not and must pay international fees. Approximately, the criteria is as follows – applicants are eligible for EU fee status if they are EU nationals and have resided within the European Economic Area or Switzerland for the three years prior to the start of their graduate studies. - Is my eligibility for the CDT affected by Brexit?
No - we continue to recruit and fund students from the EU and outside it, as before. Please see the following link for further information from UCL on Brexit and its potential impact on UCL students:
- What funding is available through the CDT for international applicants?
EU-fee status applicants
The CDT can fund 1-3 studentships to EU-fee status students in each cohort. This funding will cover all tuition fees and maintenance over the 4 years of the programme.
All other overseas applicants
The CDT can provide a small number of studentships for overseas students who do not qualify for EU-fee status. The CDT can award just one studentship to a non-EU overseas student each year. The studentship will cover all tuition fees and maintenance over the 4 years of the programme.
Since the numbers of non-EU studentships we can award is limited, we strongly recommend that overseas applicants apply for other funding to support their studies when possible (see below).
- What about external scholarships?
We strongly recommend that overseas applicants apply for external scholarships when possible.
It is essential that these scholarships provide maintenance at a similar level to the standard UCL PhD scholarship rate (currently approx. £16,377 per annum) over the full four years of the CDT integrated MRes/ PhD. For competitively won scholarships, it may be possible for the CDT to offer students a tuition fee waiver.

- Will I need a visa to study in the UK?
All overseas (non-EU) students wishing to study in the UK will need a visa from the UK Border Agency. Please make sure that you fully inform yourself of the visa you would need to study at UCL, the application process and the correct time to apply to ensure that you can begin your studies at UCL in September. More details can be found here:
EU and EEA students are not likely to need a VISA after Brexit, but they will need to register for Settled Status. Please see: https://www.ucl.ac.uk/brexit/support-ucl-community/faqs-eu-students
- Do you accept self-funded students?
The CDT will accept self-funded students of exceptional calibre. All overseas applicants must, in the first instance, apply for the CDT’s international scholarship. We will only admit self-funded students who have sufficiently impressed us at interview.
