Tel: +974 7722 6524
Ms Stefani Kavda holds an MSc in Conservation Studies from UCL Q and a BA in Conservation of Antiquities and Works of Art from the Technological Educational Institution (T.E.I) of Athens. She has completed internships at Fondazione Plart in Naples, Die Neue Sammlung - The International Design Museum in Munich, the National Archaeological Museum of Athens, and INSTAP - EC (Institute for the Aegean Prehistory) in Crete.
Ms Kavda is currently pursuing a PhD in Conservation on the cleaning of plastics in contemporary art and design. Her research focuses on poly (methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) - better known as Plexiglas, and aims to conduct systematic research on examining the way specific gel cleaning systems affect the material, with an emphasis on the surface condition. In order to undertake comparative studies, the efficiency of gels is compared to cotton swab cleaning, the conventional practice widely used among conservators. The topic is explored through experiments on new and artificially light-aged PMMA samples. The outcome will serve to standardise - to date poorly developed - methods for cleaning highly sensitive, transparent and highly polished acrylic museum objects.
