UCL Qatar was established in partnership with Qatar Foundation and is located in Education City, Doha - home to a number of the world’s most distinguished academic institutions. We are a centre of excellence for the study of cultural heritage and knowledge management and offered a rigorous and dynamic learning environment. We offered two master’s degree programmes, the MA Museum and Gallery Practice and the MA in Library and Information Studies, specifically designed to meet the needs of both international and Qatar-based students, looking for careers in the cultural heritage and library and knowledge management sectors.
Now in the final academic year of a ten-year agreement with Qatar Foundation by 2020 we will have helped more than 300 students from over 60 countries graduate and delivered more than 230 Professional and Executive Education courses to more than 2,500 students by 2020. During this time, UCL Qatar has published around 180 peer-reviewed publications and provided student placements in over 100 global cultural institutions.
UCL Qatar has not only created a centre of excellence in the Gulf region but working with local partners such as Qatar Museums and Qatar National Libraries has brought cultural heritage, knowledge management and training opportunities to the widest possible audience. During the course of this academic year, mid-career heritage professionals can access to UCL Qatar’s Professional and Executive Education courses, and members of the public can get a taste for all things cultural heritage and knowledge management via the several public events organised throughout the calendar year.
In December 2020, UCL will celebrate the successful conclusion of its operation in Education City but will continue to work to with local partners in Qatar and to offer education and research opportunities. For example, UCL’s Institute of Education is now providing an Educational Leadership Master’s programme to Qatar Foundation members. In addition, UCL Qatar is working with Qatar Museums on the QM-UCL Qatar Cultural Heritage Law Project with the aim of updating and modernising the State of Qatar’s “Law on Antiquities No. 2” (1980) ("Law No. 2") in order to produce a modern, relevant and applicable legal framework for cultural heritage.
