Meet the Researchers in Residence

Ruth Plackett 
Senior Research Fellow, Primary Care & Population Health 

Ruth is a Senior Research Fellow at UCL's Department of Primary Care and Population Health, with a background in psychology. Her current research focuses on the impact of social media on young people's mental health. Recently, she completed a NIHR Three Schools’ Mental Health Programme Fellowship at UCL, where she investigated the relationship between social media use and young adults' mental health, and explored how primary care can better support their mental well-being.

Rachel Burns 
Senior Research Fellow in Inclusion Health, Epidemiology & Public Health 

Dr. Rachel Burns (she/her) is an anthropologist and epidemiologist, who conducts research on migration and inclusion health. Rachel currently works as a Senior Research Fellow in the Collaborative Centre of Inclusion Health (CCIH) in the UCL Institute of Epidemiology and Health Care, Research Department Epidemiology and Public Health. She gained a BA in Anthropology from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, holds an MSc in the Control of Infectious Diseases from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Diseases, and PhD in Epidemiology and Public Health from UCL. She has experience in conducting large-scale epidemiology studies using administrative health records, mixed methods research, and employs coproduction principles across all stages of the research process. She is the chair of the DOTW UK Expert Consortium of Refugee and Migrant Health and leads the UCL Homelessness and Inclusion Health module.

Brian Beach 
Senior Research Fellow in Social Policy & Gerontology, Epidemiology & Public Health 

Dr Brian Beach has worked at the intersection of policy and research on ageing for 19 years, with a key interest in later-life employment, retirement, and early labour market exit. This fellowship offers an excellent opportunity to inform government strategy to support economic activity with perspectives on managing illness, disability, and health-promoting work.

Francesca Zanatta 
Francesca Zanatta. Associate Lecturer (Mental Health), Institute of Epidemiology & Health. 

Fran’s background is in Medical Anthropology & Interpersonal Psychology. Trained as Intentional Peer Support Worker and as psychodynamic child & adolescent counselling psychotherapist, Fran’s clinical work focuses on the complexities of identity, agency, and social relations.   

Fran joined the MH-ALL team in 2022, through a nonlinear journey into research, which includes working in schools, in the voluntary sector, and as campaigner.   

Fran is currently working on a project funded by UCL Grand Challenges on intergenerational strategies to tackle social isolation with James Baggaley (UCL Policy Lab) and Citizens UK.
