Abstract:
Professor Barbara Taylor's book, The Last Asylum - A memoir of Madness in our Times' (Hamish Hamilton) has been widely acclaimed for its honesty and its compassion. A substantial focus of the book is the account of the twenty year analysis.
In this conversation the Psychoanalyst and Psychiatrist Dr Edgard Sanchez-Bernal and Professor Barbara Taylor will explore complexities at stake in a patient's writing and recording the process of her analysis both personally and for what it might enable for psychoanalysis and its contemporary reception and dissemination.
Speaker Biographies:
Professor Barbara Taylor is Professor of Humanities at Queen Mary University of London. Her previous books include Mary Wollstonecraft and the Feminist Imagination (2003), On Kindness, co-written with Adam Phillips (2009) and History & Psyche: Culture, Psychoanalysis and the Past, co-edited with Sally Alexander (2012).
Dr Edgard Sanchez-Bernal is a Psychiatrist and a Psychoanalyst. He currently works part time as a Consultant Psychiatrist / Psychotherapist at King's College London / South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation TRUST. He also works privately as a Psychoanalyst / Psychotherapist. He is trained as a General Adult Psychiatrist and is a Specialist Associate of the Royal College of Psychiatrists. He is a Felllow Member of the British Psychoanalytic Society.
