Psychoanalysis moved away from Freud's more open-minded enquiry into human sexuality towards an acceptance of heterosexuality as the biological norm, which placed same-sex attraction in the inevitable position of a developmental failure. Only recently have clinicians embarked upon an attempt to review these assumptions, to face the challenges posed by a more confident LGB community. Sexuality is now increasingly seen as a plural phenomenon, and the task of the clinician is to attend to its vicissitudes, whatever the sexual orientation of the individual concerned.
In this 2-day short Course we aim at providing a review of the way both psychoanalysis and Jungian analysis are taking up this challenge, both theoretically and clinically.
The following points will be among those explored:
Do we need to change our psychoanalytic assumptions to work with gay and lesbian patients? Are the Oedipus complex, in its positive and negative form, and the Jungian notion of contra sexuality still relevant? What contributions can psychoanalytic and
Jungian approaches make to the understanding of sexuality and same-sex orientation? Are there specific aspects of transference and countertransference dynamics that arise in the work with gay and lesbian patients and/or analysts?
Who the course is for
Psychoanalysts, Psychotherapists, Counsellors, Trainees and anyone interested in applying Jungian and psychoanalytic ideas in a professional setting.
