About PILLAR

Every year, around 1 million older people in the UK fall victim to financial fraud, resulting in losses of up to £7.4 billion—in some cases these can include their entire life savings. Beyond financial loss, these crimes affect older peoples’ physical and mental well-being.

To tackle this growing issue, we are building a National Interdisciplinary Network that brings together:

  • Individuals – Older people with lived experience and their families
  • Communities – Charity organisations and local authorities
  • Organisations – Financial services, law enforcement, and financial crime specialists

Our Goals

  1. Identify the most effective strategies to prevent financial fraud targeting older people
  2. Co-produce public awareness campaigns at local and national level

Our Approach

We will use both quantitative and qualitative research to develop innovative solutions:

  • Data Analysis – Examining risk factors of financial fraud involving older people
  • Lived Experience Research – Understanding older people’s lived experiences and using these shape prevention strategies.

Get Involved

We welcome collaboration from individuals, communities, and organisations who want to help prevent financial fraud. If you’d like to contribute or learn more, please contact Dr Vasiliki Orgeta, v.orgeta@ucl.ac.uk, or Hoi Tat Kwok, h.kwok.23@ucl.ac.uk.
