SALSA

Supporting family carers of people with dementia at the end of life: Developing a decision aid (SALSA)

Project Summary

This study aims to understand which decisions family carers need to make at the end of life for someone with dementia, and develop a decision aid to support family carers when making these decisions at home and in care homes.

The decision aid will be grounded in the experiences of family carers. This Alzheimer's Society Fellowship consists of four work streams (WS): WS1 a review of existing studies to identify decision aids which have been developed for end of life across conditions; WS2 an analysis of existing interviews collected from previous studies, supplemented by interviews with family carers and people with dementia; WS3 with support from people with dementia, family carers and practitioners to synthesise the findings from WS1 and WS2 to develop a decision aid through a series of workshops; finally, WS4 will test the decision aid with family carers for six months.
