Technology Monitoring in Severe Dementia

Is there a role of technology in monitoring awareness in people with severe dementia?

Project Summary

The current PhD project attempts to explore the acceptability and feasibility of BIS technology in monitoring awareness in people with severe dementia.

My PhD project is separated into three workstreams (WS). First, we conducted a systematic review (WS1) to understand how awareness is preserved or impaired in severe Alzheimer’s Disease (AD). In WS2, we will carry out interviews to elicit the views of people with mild dementia and caregivers of people of severe dementia on the use of BIS technology in monitoring awareness in severe dementia.

The interview study will help us understand whether it is acceptable to use this type of technology in the care of people with severe dementia. WS3 examines the feasibility of using the BIS monitor on care home residents with severe dementia. I will also use other observational measures to investigate the clinical utility of BIS in this setting.
