Research summary
I have been actively involved in research in dementia since 1993. My main areas of research are Dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB), functional and molecular neuroimaging in subjective and mild cognitive impairment, post-mortem validation of clinical and imaging findings and new treatments in dementia. I have published several key papers on neuroimaging of the dopamine transporter in DLB & Parkinson’s disease and co-authored a number of clinical guidance and research criteria.
I am the lead consultant in the Essex Neurocognitive Clinic which is well established, has an extensive database and is the focus for a number of research projects and treatment trials including most recently “the predictors of COgnitive DECline in attenders of memory clinic” (CODEC) project.
I am collaborating with Prof Claudia Cooper on The APPLE-Tree programme. This is a multimodal intervention to deliver targeted behaviour changes to the population at higher risk of dementia.
I am the co-lead for the clinical support group for the Early Detection of Neurodegenerative diseases (EDoN) project which is facilitated by Alzheimer’s Research UK. The aim is to develop innovative ways to detect neurodegeneration in the brain years before the manifestation of symptoms of dementia.
I am the PI for England for Amyloid imaging to prevent Alzheimer’s disease (AMYPAD) study funded by EU IMI. This is a European phase 4, multicentre, prospective, randomized controlled study of nine hundred patients with subjective cognitive decline plus, mild cognitive impairment, and dementia possibly due to Alzheimer’s disease.
