Professor Jane Pirkis, Director of the Centre for Mental Health in the Melbourne School of Population and Global Health, University of Melbourne and Editor-in-Chief of Crisis, has agreed to come to UCL to give a talk about suicide prevention: “Using the media as a force for good in suicide prevention”
At this seminar we will also have an opportunity to discuss new findings from a UCL team about the press reporting of the suicide of Caroline Flack and suicide mortality patterns in the period after her death, and how we should engage with the media about their implications.
Jane is a key international figure in suicide research and led the forthcoming Lancet Public Health Series on public health approaches to suicide, due for publication on World Suicide Prevention Day 10/09/2024. She is a really engaging speaker and this is a great opportunity to meet her and also for members of the UCL Special Interest Group in Self-Harm & Suicide to come together. Further information about our SIG are here: https://www.ucl.ac.uk/mental-health/research/special-interest-groups/special-interest-group-self-harm-and-suicide.
The talk is open to any member of the DoP, including MSc students as well any UCL staff/students interested in self-harm or suicide research.
We look forward to seeing you either in person at UCL (Wing A Seminar Room, 6th floor, Maple House, 149 Tottenham Court Rd, London W1T 7NF) or online via Zoom (please contact SIG for login access)
