DoP Green Team Pledges for the Planet 2020-21

In the UCL Sustainability Awards 2020, the DoP Green Team won Silver for our Pledges for the Planet plan, which aimed to encourage staff and students to make environment-related changes in their everyday choices and behaviours. We couldn’t implement this plan in 2020, due to COVID, but we put it into action in 2021, as part of our submission to the UCL-wide sustainability competition.

Pledges for the Planet is a list of sustainable lifestyle changes including options for everyone, those of us who already do a lot to reduce our waste and our carbon footprints, and those who are still starting out with this. Some pledges are relatively easy; others are more challenging. Some may cost a little more; others save you money. Some may improve your health and quality of life. Some involve taking things a bit slower, and others help save time.

We created a survey for DoP staff and students to indicate some ways in which we were already environmentally active and to make and track the progress of new pledges. The results from both rounds of the survey, in February and May 2021, are available to view

The DoP did it again!

After winning the previous two UCL Christmas switch offs, in 2017 and 2018, in 2019 the DoP yet again won the last UCL Easter Switch off.

Each year, a lot of lights, appliances and equipment are left on when UCL is closed, and this has a big financial and carbon impact.

In 2019 the Division of Psychiatry had the largest proportion of staff and students pledging to switch off lights, appliances, and equipment over the Easter closure.

DoP's Fairtrade Bake off

In 2017, the DoP ran its 1st Fairtrade Bake Off competition raising funds for the environmental charity Thames 21. Prizes were awarded for 'Best tasting' and 'Most sustainably produced'.

  • Sustainability award: Aisling Stringer (lemon & blueberry cake), MARQUE study team
  • Fairtrade award: joint winners Kirsten Moore (carrot cake) & Sarah Dowling (chocolate and cherry brownies)

Particular commendation to Aisling for cycling her cake into the office, thus securing her sustainability prize!
