Undergraduate Preparatory Certificates

The Undergraduate Preparatory Certificates (UPC) prepare international students for a UCL undergraduate degree who don’t have the qualifications to enter directly. These intensive one-year foundation courses are taught on our central London campus.

Typical UPC students will be high achievers in a 12-year school system which does not meet the standard required for direct entry to UCL.

Course overview


Having the chance to take the programme as a three-year BSc or a four-year integrated masters, the Business and Health BSc/MSci programme gives you a core business curriculum including accounting, marketing, finance, strategy, and entrepreneurship coupled with cutting-edge courses in health and healthcare.

More importantly, you get to shape the programme around your interests and future career plans through specialist routes – Health Science and Healthcare Management.

Students who choose Health Science will explore the biological, behavioural, and social aspects of health and disease, providing a broader understanding of health and disease and preparing students for diverse careers in healthcare, research, education, and public health.

Taking the Healthcare Management route, students will focus on the administration, organisation, and leadership of healthcare organisations and systems. It involves overseeing the operational and strategic aspects of healthcare delivery, including managing resources, implementing policies, and ensuring efficient and effective healthcare services.

Through the programme there are opportunities for studying abroad and work placements, however, these are only available to those who take the four-year integrated Masters route (MSci). Visit the Business and Health MSci prospectus page for further information.

If students are unsure whether to pick the BSc or MSci, they are advised to apply for the MSci initially, although transfer between the BSc or MSci option, as well as the Healthcare Management or Health Science specialism, can take place up to the end of their first year and is straightforward.

Teaching and learning

In each year of your degree you will take a number of individual modules, normally valued at 15 or 30 credits, adding up to a total of 120 credits for the year. Modules are assessed in the academic year in which they are taken. The balance of compulsory and optional modules varies from programme to programme and year to year. A 30-credit module is considered equivalent to 15 credits in the European Credit Transfer System (ECTS).

Upon successful completion of 360 credits, you will be awarded a BSc (Hons) in Business and Health.

Year one

In your first year, you’ll gain a strong basis in core business areas such as accounting and finance, economics, management, marketing and statistics. This comes alongside the introduction to the management side of health where you’ll be introduced to topics around social care, innovation within healthcare and the interdisciplinarity of the health and business space.

Year two

In the first half of year two, all students continue to get grounding in general health and business topics. You’ll gain insights into project management and research methods in the health and business industry alongside looking into ethics and comparative systems in healthcare. In the second half, students split into their chosen routes of either Health Science or Healthcare Management.

Our Health Science students will go in-depth into demographic analysis and population health and learn about acute and chronic infectious diseases whilst our Healthcare Management route students will gain a greater understanding of economics, finance, supply chain management and human resources within the healthcare context.

Year three

In the first term, BSc students will continue to engage with topics specific to their chosen routes. Healthcare Management route students will touch on operations and health policy and management whilst our Health Science route students cover health and economic development and population ageing. Both routes will also gain a grounding in data analytics, the use of AI and sustainability.

In the second half of the year, students from both routes will get to bring together learnings from across the programme. You’ll have the opportunity to connect with research in an area of personal interest through your Business and Health Research Project. You’ll also get to consolidate all learning from the programme in the integrative experience that is the Capstone in Business and Health.

Your learning

Module teaching includes attending lectures, seminars, and weekly group tutorials for in-depth discussions. Face-to-face lectures feature guest speakers and UCL academics. Ongoing seminars focus on case-based presentations, fostering analytical and presentation skills. Consolidation seminars test knowledge with problem or case-based presentations, offering formative feedback before summative assessment. Project development workshops hone investigative, analytical, synthesis, and data interrogation skills, applied in real-world business, health, and research projects.

Students will spend approximately 14 – 15 hours a week across four modules per term in structured in-person learning – seminars and lecturers. They would also be expected to undertake 5 - 6 hours of independent learning per module each week alongside their in-class activities, which include readings, videos and other online activities.

Assessment

Exams test knowledge and its application to case studies. Coursework essays develop organised arguments. Presentations involve selecting, synthesising, and communicating information for diverse audiences, both individually and in groups. The business project encompasses project management, planning, budgeting, strategy development, marketing, and stakeholder engagement. The research project/dissertation includes analysis, literature review, critical appraisal, research writing, and argument presentation. Enhanced research skills cover health-based hypotheses, literature reviews, and practical analysis. Health and Business case analyses involve identifying needs, addressing challenges, considering financial and legal aspects, and navigating ethics. Business presentations showcase communication, information delivery, persuasion, and professional knowledge application in various scenarios.

The Business and Health BSc/MSci is a new programme for 2025/26 entry so we do not have any alumni data to draw from, but we expect that graduates of the Health Science route can pursue diverse career paths in healthcare and related fields. They may work as healthcare practitioners, researchers, educators, or administrators in clinical settings. They may also work in public health, health promotion, health education, community health organisations, pharmaceutical companies, research institutions, and government agencies.

We expect that graduates of the Healthcare Management route can pursue careers in healthcare administration, hospital management, healthcare consulting, healthcare finance, health policy analysis, and healthcare leadership positions within hospitals, healthcare systems, insurance companies, government agencies, and consulting firms.

The Business and Health BSc/MSci facilitates interactions with employers through the programme’s placement options and numerous Careers Fairs, our in-house careers team, networking opportunities, speaker sessions and our ever-growing GBSH and UCL alumni networks.

Additional costs

Depending on the route you select, you may be required to move between UCL Bloomsbury and UCL East campuses. Students will need to fund their own travel between the UCL Bloomsbury and UCL East campuses for the face-to-face components of these modules.
