In 1826, a university education was limited to the very few. You had to be male, a member of the established church, and independently wealthy. UCL’s founders wanted to do things differently. Inspired by the ideas of philosopher Jeremy Bentham, they decided that education should be available to all who could benefit from it – and UCL was created.
