Step 7: Academic Technology Approval Scheme (ATAS)

If you are planning to study in the areas of Science, Engineering and Technology, you may need to apply for clearance under ATAS.

If you are planning to study a 4-year integrated Masters (e.g., a MSci or MEng course) in the areas of:

  • Science,
  • Engineering, and
  • Technology

You may need to apply for clearance under ATAS before you can apply for a Student Visa.

You do not need to apply for clearance under ATAS if you are a UK or EU/European Economic Area national, or a national of:

  • Australia,
  • Canada,
  • Japan,
  • New Zealand,
  • Singapore,
  • South Korea, or
  • the United States of America.

You may still need a Student Visa to study in the UK.

Your offer letter from UCL will:

  • confirm if you need to get an ATAS certificate.
  • provide all the information needed to complete your ATAS application

A copy of your offer letter is available in the Offer section of your Portico.

When to apply for an ATAS certificate

You can apply for the ATAS certificate whilst you are holding a conditional or unconditional offer.

The minimum processing time is 20 working days.

We recommend that you apply for ATAS clearance at least one month before you wish to submit your visa application.
