Module overview

Peripheral Nerve Injury is a field of regenerative medicine which is advancing towards a paradigm shift in available therapeutic options. The ability of medicine to manipulate one of the only organ systems which has the capacity in a human to regrow is at the forefront of fields of surgical science, pharmacology, cellular engineering, bioengineering and assistive technologies.

This module offers the student the capacity to experience all the current therapeutic options for peripheral nerve injury treatment through a collaboration of the only clinical unit in the world to focus purely on nerve injury and UCL; a recognised world leader in neurobiology and engineering. This exposure will be through lectures and exposure in the clinical environment (clinic, rehab and the operating theatre) to all the basic concepts and theories of improving outcomes after nerve injury.

Learning outcomes

Upon successful completion of this module, students will:

  • Have gained an appreciation of what effect a nerve injury produces on an individual
  • Have experience of the multidisciplinary approach deployed to investigate, support and treat patients with nerve injury
  • Understand how to assess this nerve injury and what current therapies are possible
  • Have gained an appreciation of what engages current scientific endeavor towards decreasing the impact of nerve injury in affected patient
  • Have gained the ability to speculate about the future directions of possible scientific advance and their application and implications

Module prerequisites

This is a level one module (equivalent to first year undergraduate). In addition to the standard UCL Summer School entry criteria, applicants should have studied one subject in the sciences, preferably Biology, to A level standard or equivalent.

Module hours

Classes (usually three or four hours per day) take place from Monday to Friday any time between 9am and 6pm. The module offers 45 contact hours: 27 hours are taught on UCL’s Bloomsbury campus and 18 hours are taught at the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital (RNOH) at Stanmore, Middlesex. The RNOH is the UK’s leading specialist orthopaedic hospital, recognised internationally for its outstanding patient care, research and education. Stanmore is approximately a 40-minute journey from central London. Students are expected to spend an additional 100 hours on assignments and self-study.

Module leader

Tom Quick is a fellowship trained peripheral neurosurgeon at the National Referral Centre the Peripheral Nerve Injury Unit at the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital. Toms clinical practice encompasses all aspects of nerve injury treatment from primary intervention to later reconstruction in the neonate, child, adolescent and adult. He also runs a clinic in the treatment of the upper limb in tetraplegia.
Tom has research collaborations across UCL within the Nerve Regeneration Network and is currently engaged in exploratory science projects towards the rate of nerve regeneration, MRI neurography and cell therapies towards augmenting and improving nerve regeneration. The Division of Surgery UCL appointed Tom Head of Undergraduate Education in 2014.
