Why did you choose the UCL Summer School?

UCL Summer School was a great time for me to consolidate my clinical skills and meet like-minded professionals and colleagues from all around the world! I was excited to spend my summer in one of London’s leading universities, right in the heart of the bustling city, studying in historical buildings from world-renowned experts. I decided that UCL allowed me to explore my interests while giving me the space to unwind after lessons with my international friends.

How did you find the UCL Summer School?

Dr Lois and Dr Emma were wonderful tutors who brought the humanistic side of medicine to life! I was deeply inspired by their passion for teaching, and the UCL environment made it conducive for me to engage in critical questions about healthcare with other peers in the medical field from a variety of healthcare systems. This made the whole Summer School even more enriching due to the diversity of perspectives and the quality of learning. UCL’s social programme also allowed students to interact with other international peers in other modules, further strengthening the bonds and friendships that you can forge.

Tell us a bit about the module you took – what have been the highlights?

I particularly enjoyed being able to learn clinical examination skills from the tutors, and there were many moments in the class where students were encouraged to reflect and raise their own opinions on healthcare issues. It was initially awkward for me to articulate my views, but the encouragement of the tutors alongside the class’s atmosphere made it easier for me to engage with the subjects.

What was your favourite thing about London and why?

I love the heartbeat of London. It’s something mystical, the way history and modernity meet when you have big malls and great food housed within beautiful architecture built in the past. The city invites you to admire its culture but also welcomes you to find and add your own little spot into the tapestry of diverse cultures you get to experience. From fantastic musical plays to quaint little cafes, there’s always a place for you to enjoy the vibe of the city.

Where is your favourite spot on the UCL campus and why?

I really enjoyed studying in the Medical Sciences Building! It’s just charming to be in that building and imagine yourself as a student of the past walking around the hallways.

What advice would you give to any students looking to apply next year?

I would advise everyone to start! No need to hesitate if you’re looking for a programme which balances fun with knowledge and inquiry. I was initially worried that it might be a heavy curriculum, but the course is designed to hit the sweet spot, allowing students to have fun exploring the city, but leave each lesson feeling like they’ve truly gained something new.

What is the most interesting thing you’ve done, seen or got involved with during the Summer School?

I really enjoyed going to complete the Seven Sisters hike (twice). It was a truly breathtaking scene and a core memory for me and my friends! Do consider taking the train to Paris for a weekend trip or even going to visit the renowned Cambridge and Oxford universities!
