Meet Carolina from Pontifical Catholic University of Paraná, Brazil. She studied Mental Health and the Mind during the UCL Summer School.
Why did you choose the UCL Summer School?
I chose the UCL Summer School primarily because of the university's reputation and rankings, as well as a programme with a module that caught my attention. The Mental Health and the Mind module seemed very complete and interesting.
The organisation and activities planned by the university were also decisive factors.
How did you find the UCL Summer School?
It was an incredible experience. The staff is very organised, as well as very helpful with any doubts.
The university has so much to offer, with an amazing library and great places to eat.
The module I took was really, really good. My professor was greatly skilled and also very thoughtful and accessible.
The social programmes are amazing — so organised, and they really help you get to know other people and make closer friendships.
Tell us a bit about the module you took – what have been the highlights?
My module was really well organised. We had some guest speakers who brought different views and practical information to the classroom.
The course is relatively demanding. It is completely manageable, but you do need to take some time out of your day to dedicate to your studies and assessments.
The lectures were very intense, with a lot of content to be covered every day.
What was your favourite thing about London and why?
I absolutely loved the fact that London is such a multicultural city! You can go to so many good parks, but also enjoy museums and theatres.
There is always something to do and discover — some pub or show to go to. I believe that makes the city seem full of life and entertainment.
Where is your favourite spot on the UCL Campus and why?
I really liked the main library. It is very central and a great spot for studying and doing research.
It is also so gorgeous that even just hanging out there is very inspiring. It has a very complete archive and the staff is always very helpful.
Which UCL accommodation did you stay in, and how was it?
I stayed at St Pancras Way. I really liked it, even though it is a bit farther from campus compared to the other ones.
The rooms were very spacious, and the staff was always very helpful. My closest group of friends were the ones that stayed in the same accommodation as me, so we would always hang out there or nearby, in Camden.
What advice would you give to any students looking to apply next year?
Really make the best of it! Enjoy all programmes, travel around, take in all that London has to offer.
Don’t worry about making friends — everyone there is eager to get to know each other and have a good time.
London is a big city, but things are very walkable and public transport works well. Take a double-decker red bus — they are so iconic and very functional!
What is the most interesting thing you’ve done, seen or got involved with during the Summer School?
One of the best experiences is definitely the boat party on the Thames! You get to see the city, the London Bridge opens for the boat to pass, and it is an amazing way to have some fun with your friends before you have to say goodbye.
I also had some really good times in the parks. There is such beautiful nature to be seen in the UK.
Day trips are also great ideas, as well as seeing at least a concert, show or play — it's a must!
