Module overview

This module aims to develop an understanding of the principles of quantum mechanics and their implications to the solution of physical problems. Topics include:
The failure of classical physics.
Steps towards wave mechanics.
One-dimensional time-independent problems.
The formal basis of quantum mechanics.
Angular Momentum in quantum mechanics.
The hydrogen atom - qualitative treatment.
Magnetic moments and electron spin.
Correspondence principle and Expansion Postulate.
Ehrenfest's theorem.
Introduction to atomic structure.
Review of one electron atoms.
Many-electron atoms including the Pauli Principle and spin.
Atoms and radiation.
Atoms in static electric and magnetic fields.
Molecular Structure and bonding.
Molecular Spectra.
Harmonic oscillator.

Prerequisites: PHAS2246 Maths III (this may be taken in parallel) or its equivalent.

Structure: 27 lectures, six hours of problem classes/discussion.
