Module overview

This module shares lectures with CHEM2301 and covers a subset of the material in that module, including quantum mechanics and atomic spectroscopy. There is no laboratory component. CHEM1301 (or equivalent) is a prerequisite. The module is delivered in three blocks.

Block A
Quantum Mechanics Fundamental postulates: the wavefunction, operators, expectation values, the Hamiltonian, the Schrodinger equation, eigenfunctions and eigenvalues
Exact solutions, the helium atoms, many electron atoms
Molecular orbitals, bonding and antibonding orbitals
Homonuclear diatomics.

Thermodynamics
Second law of thermodynamics
Equalities of the second law of thermodynamics
Gibbs and Helmholtz energies
Maxwell equations
Homogeneous systems
Gas expansions
Heterogeneous systems
Applications of the Gibbs-Duhem equation
Vapour pressure and the Clapeyron equation.

Block C
Spectroscopy
Atomic Spectroscopy: The H atom, term symbols, selection rules, absorption and emission spectra.
