Mechanical Engineering

The department is known for its informal style of teaching. We aim to take students of a high standard and equip them with skills for analysis and design so that they can be employed as professional engineers in virtually any sector of the mechanical engineering industry, such as aerospace, automotive and even biomedical.

Why study Mechanical Engineering at UCL?

The first professor of engineering in the UK was appointed at UCL in 1827, with the Department of Mechanical Engineering the first to be established in England in 1847. Since this time the department has made many contributions to engineering science, continuing to this day through diverse collaborations with industry and research establishments.

What you will gain from study at UCL

The expertise and range of modules on offer is diverse, with major themes in mechanical engineering, naval architecture, marine engineering and bioengineering. With an international reputation for research, you can be certain our modules are relevant to current and future needs.

Teaching and assessment

Most modules consist of lectures and tutorials each week, in the Fall and Spring Terms, as well as two or three laboratory practical sessions during lab week. A three-hour written examination is scheduled in the Summer Term for most modules. Alternative assessment is offered for Fall Term-only students. We cannot offer Fall or Full Year modules as Spring Term.

Modules in Mechanical Engineering

Please note that this guide lists a range of popular modules offered as a representative sample. It is not exhaustive and, since the guide is published ahead of time, module options may have changed, been deleted or replaced. If you have very specific study needs or require confirmation of module availability for 2024/25, you are strongly advised to get in touch with the relevant Affiliate contact, listed on this subject page, before making an application.

Affiliate students are also able to take 'Minor' modules at Level 2. These modules are normally taken over years 2 and 3 (i.e. of two-year duration) but they are distinct modules in each year, so an Affiliate does not have to sit both years. The availability of these Minor modules may change, so Affiliate students should check the module catalogue here to see if their favoured module is running.
Fall Term and Spring Term students take modules to the value of 60 credits, and may only choose modules shown as available in the period when they are in attendance. Full Year students take modules to the value of 120 credits and may choose any modules shown as available to Full Year students. At least half of the credits taken must be from Mechanical Engineering; the remainder can be chosen from other UCL Departments.
Affiliate students may be permitted to take one or more of the modules listed as Level 4 (i.e. Master's level), subject to approval by the department.
