Information for Prospective Students

Dean's Prize

The Dean's Prize supports overseas fee-paying students who have won a competitive scholarship (or are intending to apply for China Scholarships Council funding - see IMPORTANT NOTE below) to cover their stipend, by waiving the international fees.

The Dean’s Prize is available only to students wishing to pursue research degrees in the Faculty of Engineering Sciences or the Faculty of Mathematical & Physical Sciences.

Applications for the Dean's Prize should be submitted by the candidate's prospective supervisor to the appropriate Faculty Graduate Tutor and include the following information:

  • Short (1 page maximum) description of the proposed research project
  • CV of the candidate
  • Written confirmation by the relevant Head of Department that they support the submission and agree to the shortfall in their budget due to the waiver of fees
  • For Mathematical & Physical Sciences (MAPS) students: two references from colleagues external to UCL (these may be the references supplied with the candidate’s PhD application). If your department is submitting more than one application, applications must be ranked in order of preference by Departmental Graduate Tutors before submission.
  • For Engineering students: if your department is submitting more than one application, applications must be ranked in order of preference by Departmental Graduate Tutors before submission.

Applications for the Dean’s Prize in Engineering are considered in two rounds, one in February and one in April. Applicants should consult their prospective departments at the earliest possible stage as internal departmental deadlines may be some weeks before the deadline for submission of applications to the faculty.

Supervisors can find additional information, including a more extensive list of the information and supporting material required, at https://www.engineering.ucl.ac.uk/intranet/governance/research-degrees/
