Information for Prospective Students

Trudeau Foundation Scholarship

The Pierre Elliott Trudeau Foundation provides up to 15 scholarships annually to prospective and current MPhil/PhD students who carry out research in areas related to the Foundation's four themes in the social sciences and humanities:

  • Human Rights and Dignity
  • Responsible Citizenship
  • Canada in the World
  • People and their Natural Environment

Applicants must be Canadian citizens or landed immigrants pursuing full-time doctoral studies in Canada or foreign institutions. Candidates will be considered by the Foundation only if they have been nominated by a university.

The scholarships provide up to $60,000 per scholar for up to four years.

How do I apply?

UCL will only be able to consider your application for nomination if you are a current student at UCL and registered on a Master's or MPhil/PhD programme within one of the following UCL Faculties:

  • Faculty of Social & Historical Sciences
  • Faculty of Arts & Humanities
  • Faculty of Laws
  • Institute of Education

You will need to complete and submit an online application form, including the required references and transcripts, to the Foundation's application portal (you will need to 'Create an account') by Thursday, 23 November 2017.

All Trudeau application references must be signed and on letterhead, and should include an explanation of how the candidate meets the Foundation's criteria. Incomplete applications will not be considered for nomination.  Applications must be submitted to us in electronic format via the application portal - paper applications will not be accepted.

In addition to the references submitted online with your Trudeau application, you will also be required to submit a reference from your current UCL supervisor to the Student Funding Office.  This reference should comment on areas such as your academic performance, study/research skills, prizes and scholarships won, relevant personal qualities and career aims and prospects.  The reference should be a maximum of one page and should be emailed to by Thursday, 23 November 2017.

The next stage in the process will be a review of all applications by a UCL Selection Committee who will decide which candidates will be nominated. We will then add a letter of nomination to the selected applications and submit them directly to the Foundation by their specified deadline.
