What attracted you to UCL?
The school’s location was probably one of the top reasons for me. I love that I am living in central London and a quick walk from any opportunity I could want in London. I also liked the wide variety of classes my department was offering that encompassed history in all areas of the world.
How has UCL been different to what you had known at high school?
There is a lot more work at UCL, especially in second year than what I experienced in high school and the class schedule is more relaxed than what I was used to so there is more free time which I now spend studying in one of UCL’s many libraries or exploring the city.
What aspects of your studies do you enjoy the most?
I enjoy the variety of classes I take in my department that encompass different areas in the world and time periods. I also enjoy the small classes and seminars I have that give the opportunity to discuss the week’s topic with other student and my professors.
What makes you most proud to be a UCL student?
I am proud to be part of such a diverse university that is an inclusive environment between all students and professors.
Describe your time at UCL in three words.
Diverse, historical, hard-working.
What are some of the most interesting things you have done, seen, or got involved with while at UCL?
Both years I have been here I have gone to the freshers Fair at the beginning of each year to find societies to join and make friends in. This year I am in the Hiking, Museum and Canadian Society. I have also taken a leadership position in the Canadian society to help plan events for all other Canadians at UCL to build an inclusive and international environment.
In what way has studying in London enriched your studies?
Being a history student in London has provided me with an endless number of opportunities to visit sites and museums that further my understanding on the topics I read about in my classes. I have classes that are hands on and will go to museums to enrich the material we learn about and being located in the heart of London makes it an amazing city to study history in.
Who inspires you most at UCL and why?
My peers and other students inspire me the most. To sit in the library and study with everyone and watch the work ethic other students have pushes and motivates me to do my best.
What advice would you give to a student considering UCL?
Future students should know that if you come here you need to be ready to work hard academically. But also, to take the time and enjoy themselves at UCL. There are so many opportunities such as the endless list of societies in the university but also throughout the city. Any student considering UCL should want to live a busy city life and be willing to take all the opportunities the university and city have to offer.
How has being at UCL changed you and the way you think about yourself?
After living in a small town my entire life and then moving to London, UCL has opened the world up to me of possible future opportunities and goals I want to achieve. By living and studying in central London it has given me self confidence that I can achieve anything and that with hard work I can be successful here.
What are your future ambitions and how do you think that being a UCL student will help you get there?
After I graduate from UCL I hope to return to Canada and complete a Master's degree of some sort in the areas of museum studies, diplomacy or heritage. By being able to study the history I want here and with the university’s global name it will open more opportunities as to what schools I can go to in Canada and the level of jobs I can apply for. The academic support and learning to properly research and write as a student here will prepare me for any of my possible career paths in the future.
