Inclusion in the map is not an endorsement from UCL and you should exercise caution when booking private accommodation. Key information

What do you mean by student halls and residences? Should I live in one?

A student hall or residence is purpose-built or designed accommodation open only to students. Historically, student residences in the UK were known as halls of residence, with dormitory-type rooms and shared central facilities. However, many student residences are now comprised exclusively of studios and larger apartments, so it would be inaccurate to refer to them as halls.

Student halls and residences are a convenient way of finding a place to live, but the decision to live in one is yours. You don’t need to find people to share with. You don't need to pay separate utility bills. Most have an on-site reception desk and security. UCL halls usually have wardens and student advisers. You don’t need to undertake a viewing in person because photos and other media should be extensive, and most will have external reviews on Google Maps or elsewhere. You can use Street View outside and, in many cases, inside residences.

Location, size, and amenities affect pricing. Some are utilitarian, others have on-site gyms, swimming pools, and cinema rooms.

Availability and applications

UCL and UoL intercollegiate residences are allocated on a rolling basis from April. You should apply directly from the UCL Accommodation website. Some residences or room types are not open to all students, e.g. under-18s.

Privately run student residences are available to book directly from the provider throughout the year. The cheapest rooms tend to become scarce by the spring.

Prices

Prices are indicative and based on public listings for the cheapest available single-occupancy rooms and studios for a 2025/26 full-year contract at the time of the most recent update (see below). Prices are omitted in instances where they have not yet confirmed for 2025/26.

Monthly prices are calculated from weekly prices.

For applications to UCL and UoL halls, your budget is taken into account, but a specific room or residence is not guaranteed.

At privately run student residences, cheaper rooms tend to be reserved earlier than more expensive rooms, studios, and apartments.

Cheaper shared rooms may be available at some residences. They are omitted for consistency and because they are often in short supply.

Journey times and costs

Our campuses have good transport links. Indicative walking, cycling, and public-transport journey times to Bloomsbury [Gower Street], UCL East [Pool Street], and the School of Management [Canada Square] are included.

Prices for public transport in London are based on concentric zones, with zone 1 the most central. The stations around Bloomnbury are all in zone 1. The stations around the School of Management in Canary Wharf are in zone 2. Stratford, for UCL East, is in zone 2/3 (i.e. an optimal fare is calculated on the basis of your destination's zone).

Transport for London (TfL) Travelcards combine zones 1 and 2, so living in zone 2 will not increase your travel costs. Higher travel costs for zones 3–6 will usually amount to a fraction of the difference in average accommodation prices. You can find a full list of prices on the TfL website. Weekly and monthly Travelcards purchased with an 18+ Student Oyster Card are eligible for a 30% discount (the full undiscounted fare is listed on the standard adult fares page above).

How are student halls and residences chosen for inclusion on the map?

Inclusion in the map is not an endorsement from UCL and you should exercise caution when booking private accommodation. Other than our own, the student residences we have included are run independently of UCL. The UCL Students’ Union and the University of London Housing Services can provide support and advice, including contract checking and help with disputes.

We have a few criteria for inclusion. The residence must be offered exclusively to students. It must have an online presence and a landline number. It must have a Google Maps location and be visible on Street View unless it is new, in which case it is included only if the organisation has other established residences.
