Describe your time at UCL in three words: rollercoaster but fun.

Christopher Lee
MSc Energy Systems and Data Analytics
Toronto, Canada
What attracted you to UCL?
The master’s programme (MSc. Energy Systems and Data Analytics) offered at UCL was very unique and not many universities offered a programme that combined energy and data science. Additionally, UCL’s global reputation stood out to me and studying in a multi-cultural city like London felt welcoming and similar to Toronto.
How has UCL been different to what you had known at your previous university?
One distinct difference I noticed was studying at UCL brought a global perspective that I had not really thought of during my undergrad. I had mostly focused on the energy system in Ontario, Canada in my undergrad, whereas at UCL I had the opportunity to study countries like Indonesia. Since climate change is a global phenomenon, I found this extremely valuable.
What aspects of your studies do you enjoy the most?
I enjoyed learning and being curious again, which could sometimes be difficult in a job setting where you need to provide immediate value. I also really enjoyed getting drinks with my cohort and lecturers at the IOE bar or socials after classes.
What makes you most proud to be a UCL student?
The alumni and network make me proud to be a part of UCL. Seeing the amazing accomplishments of alumni and people I have met give me inspiration to follow in their footsteps.
Describe your time at UCL in three words.
Rollercoaster but fun.
What are some of the most interesting things you have done, seen, or got involved with while at UCL?
UCL has a very excellent Brazilian Jiu Jitsu club, which is also very affordable for students. Highly recommend; also would encourage to check out club ‘tasters’ and you will likely find something you enjoy.
In what way has studying in London enriched your studies?
I would say half of the value/experience of my Master's happened outside of the classroom and studying in London was a big part of that. It’s a great city, diverse people, and a central travelling hub to Europe.
Who inspires you most at UCL and why?
One of my close friends in my cohort. He was easily the top student in the class and was incredibly humble. He had an amazing opportunity in front of him after graduation, but life challenges got in the way. But he kept moving forward and will always be a great inspiration to me.
What advice would you give to a student considering UCL?
My advice would be to talk to students and alumni in the programmes you are considering (not exclusive to UCL). Sharpen your LinkedIn people searching skills... you’d be surprised how willing people are to help (and if not, it’s ok they can be busy). Show gratitude and remember to payback the favour when you are in a position to do so.
How has being at UCL changed you and the way you think about yourself?
I was never a student keen on studying abroad for a semester during my undergrad. I loved living in Canada and had great friends and family. My plan was to return to Canada after graduation, but I decided to stay and work for another 2+ years. So, I guess a lot has changed for the better.
What are your future ambitions and how do you think that being a UCL student will help you get there?
I’d love to live in Japan for a year and work at the Octopus Energy (UK energy supplier) Tokyo office, or anything energy related. If I hadn’t come to London, I don’t think I would dare to explore living outside of Canada.
