The School Direct Programme (Salaried) is an employment-based route into teaching. Participating schools, or clusters of schools that join together, are allocated a set number of student teacher places which can be applied for. Students will earn a salary while they train.

This route leads to the award of QTS (Qualified Teacher Status).
A minimum of a lower second-class UK Bachelor’s degree or an overseas qualification of an equivalent standard.
No specific subjects required.
English Language, Science and Mathematics at grade C / 5 or above. Applicants who do not offer a GCSE in English Language, Science or Mathematics may demonstrate an equivalent standard by completing a test via www.equivalencytesting.com and achieving at least a grade 5. We do not accept "applied" or "additional" GCSE subjects.
School Direct (Salaried) is an employment-based route into teaching for graduates with previous work experience. Three years’ work experience in any field is desirable.
If you are made an offer you will be required to successfully complete Occupational Health and Disclosure Barring Service (DBS) Enhanced Disclosure checks. These checks are required to ensure you meet the Department for Education’s requirements for physical and mental health to teach, as well as assessing your suitability for access to children and vulnerable adults. About this programme
Students will be part of a school team from the start and will receive intensive support from experienced teachers in the classroom. Teaching experience will prepare students for a Key Stage 1/2 focus. Opportunities will exist to build networks with fellow trainees.
This programme will prepare students for the award of Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) in line with the requirements of the Teachers’ Standards (2012).
There are two compulsory school placements. Students are expected to complete the associated tasks, and to build a portfolio of evidence during the academic year to demonstrate they have met national teaching standards.
Students do not undertake academic credits on this programme. However, all components will need to be assessed to gain QTS.

Teaching and learning
The programme is delivered via a series of lectures and workshops at the UCL Institute of Education for 15 days (10 days' Professional Studies and five days subject-specific training) spread over the autumn and spring terms. The placement schools are responsible for providing an additional 45 days of training activities, alongside the practical teaching experience. Students are assessed on their practical teaching and their progress in achieving the standards for Qualified Teacher Status by gathering evidence in the form of a portfolio.
Students will spend most of their time in two placement schools where their teaching practice will be supported by a UCL tutor and school mentor. Placements will focus on Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2. The student is employed as an unqualified teacher for the duration of the programme.

Graduates of UCL Institute of Education's teacher training programmes are currently working across a broad range of areas. Some are working as classroom teachers, while others have jobs as deputy and assistant headteachers.
Many of the student teachers trained through this route are employed by the training school or within the cluster after completing the programme. The nature of this route to Qualified Teacher Status is for schools to train student teachers who are committed to the values and ethos of the school or academy and wish to develop their teaching career within the school or cluster which invested in their training.

Each of these offer student teacher places in two key stages to gain a broad experience of teaching across primary age phases. You will gain experience of teaching across the primary curriculum, with a specific focus on phonics, early mathematics, inclusion and behaviour management. Opportunities also exist to spend a day in a special school and a secondary school to broaden your understanding of the adjacent and complementary phases and settings.
The training students receive from participating schools will enable them to become a skilled and confident teacher. The School Direct (Salaried) route allows you to earn whilst you learn, whilst being supported by experienced school mentors and expert University Tutors who will support your development into becoming a research-informed, reflective teacher.
This route leads to the award of QTS (Qualified Teacher Status).

The School Direct Training Programme (salaried) is an employment-based route for experienced graduates who meet the appropriate entry requirements and who have at least three years’ work experience. It is not necessary for this experience to be education related.
