A medical qualification from a UK university or an overseas qualification of equivalent standard. Applicants may have clinical experience, but this is not essential.

About this degree
You will study four core (compulsory) modules giving you a robust grounding in Robotics Surgical Skills (15 credits), Microsurgery Skills (15 credits) and Research Methodologies and Transferable Skills (15 credits). At the heart of the programme is the scientific research project (60 or 90 credits). This is an opportunity for you to become involved with cutting edge research in a subject of your choice, whether clinical or laboratory based. You will develop an understanding of science, critical and objective thinking while improving your written and verbal communication skills; all of these remaining modules are optional and each is worth 15 credits, you will choose three or five modules depending on the credit value of your research project. The optional modules are taught by world leading academics and clinicians and allow you to expand your knowledge in specific areas of interest or pursue topics novel to you.
Students undertake modules to the value of 180 credits.
The programme consists of a research project (90 credits), three core modules (45 credits) and three optional modules (45 credits). An additional alternative pathway has been introduced for 2020/21 comprising the three core modules (45 credits), five optional modules (75 credits) and a research project (60 credits).
Upon successful completion of 180 credits, you will be awarded a MSc in Surgical and Interventional Sciences.

You will undertake an independent research project on a subject relating to your clinical interests, culminating in a dissertation (80%) and viva (20%). As an alternative pathway for 2020/21 you can choose between a 90 credit project, ~15,000 -18,000k words or a 60 credit project ~6,000 words.
We encourage all students to submit their work for presentation at conferences and for publication.
Teaching and learning
You will be taught through a combination of online or face-to-face lectures, webinars, seminars, workshops journal clubs and tutorials. Your performance and progress will be assessed by online and unseen written examination papers, written reports and coursework and oral presentations. The research project is assessed by thesis and viva voce.
The core textbooks for all modules are available in the UCL Libraries and journal articles in your reading lists are also mostly available electronically from E-resources @ UCL. Students will be required to print and bind two copies of their Research project and depending on the service required will be approximately £50-70.
Some students like to purchase their own text books or print course documents and we suggest allowing approximately £200 per year for this.
All students are required to pay for their DBS check if required for your programme or placement if relevant. For the latest details please check the government website.
In addition, students will be required to pay for their travel costs to teaching, work placements or project locations.
The possibility of RMO (Resident Medical Officer) or SHO locum positions: In order to qualify you must have full GMC registration and hold current ALS certification.

This MSc has enabled graduates to progress in surgical training, to redirect their interests (to Radiation Oncology) or, as experienced graduates, become consultants in specialist surgical fields, throughout the UK and overseas. Examples include Consultant in Colorectal Surgery, Royal Free Hospital NHS, Senior Fellow in Microsurgery training, Perth Australia, Senior Oral Surgeon, KRG, Iraq.

"Our research group is looking at diagnosing and treating prostate cancer better. The group is composed of urology surgeons, radiologists, histopathologists, computer scientists, clinical trialists, epidemiologists, health economists and patients. This wide-ranging skill set means we can approach the problem from all angles and deliver research which is relevant to the NHS and the patients being looked after within it. Our research has already changed practice, in that men are now commonly offered an MRI scan before they have a prostate biopsy to diagnose prostate cancer. Our research has also led to improvements in treatment so that many more men now have access to minimally invasive therapies rather than traditional treatments which can carry lots of side-effects. I am able to work at the interface between looking after patients with traditional methods whilst at the same time push the envelope towards newer methods which I then use in clinic myself.
