This programme offers a conversion route-way to psychology for applicants who have already completed an undergraduate degree in a non-psychology discipline. The Graduate Certificate in Psychology, plus a follow-up Child Development MSc, or Psychology of Education MSc at the IOE, is the dual-package conversion that enables students to apply for the Graduate Basis for Chartered Membership (GBC) with the British Psychological Society (BPS).
Modes and duration
Tuesday evenings 5.30-8.30 pm for a lecture and seminar. Each module has 10 weekly sessions. The programme is taught over a 9-month period (September to May). Two daytime exams will be scheduled.

A minimum of a second class Bachelor's degree normally in a subject other than psychology from a UK university, or an overseas qualification of an equivalent standard.

About this degree
This programme will:
- impart a broad knowledge of psychological theory and research
- examine psychological research on language, the functions of the brain, personality, cognitive development, memory, sensorimotor learning, and the capacity to think, learn and solve problems
- look at the effects of the dynamics within groups and social factors such as prejudice, aggression and intelligence
- develop skills of critical analysis and ability to structure a discussion based on evidence
- develop ability to evaluate psychological theory and research
- provide a basic introduction to some of the statistical techniques commonly used in psychological research.
Students undertake two modules to the value of 60 credits.
The programme consists of two core modules (30 credits each).
- Introduction to Psychology I: Cognition and Development
- Introduction to Psychology II: Individual, Social and Biological Psychology

Graduates of this programme generally pursue careers in the fields of educational psychological or clinical psychology by applying for doctoral training.
On completion of this programme students will have gained:
- a broad knowledge of basic, key issues in psychology
- the ability to produce critical and informed appraisal about core topics in psychology, as specified by the British Psychological Society syllabus
- the ability to describe and evaluate psychological research in terms of theoretical and empirical contributions to the field
- an understanding of basic concepts in research methods and statistics
- the ability to construct a coherent argument supported by research in psychology

Graduates of this programme often progress to a relevant BPS-accredited Master's programme - Psychology of Education MSc or Child Development MSc - to complete their conversion to psychology and to be eligible to apply for Graduate Basis for Chartered Membership (GBC) with the British Psychological Society (BPS).
