Entry requirements

An upper second-class UK Bachelor's degree or higher in pharmacy, pharmaceutical science, chemistry, chemical engineering, materials science, biotechnology, pharmaceutics or a related field in the life or physical sciences, or an overseas qualification of an equivalent standard is required.

The English language level for this course is: Level 2

About this degree

Students will learn how to develop and assess a new business concept, and how to raise finance for and market a business and its outputs. They will build their scientific skill set by exploring four scientific research areas in pharmaceutics, and will interact closely with and be mentored by those who have direct experience of initiating a start-up business.

On the science side, you’ll build your research and analytical skills working with UCL’s world-leading academics, and explore the latest technologies being used to develop new medicines today, such as gene therapies and machine learning.

From a business standpoint, you’ll then cover everything that goes into launching and growing a pharmaceutical venture – from IP routes and finance, to regulations, policies and marketing – with mentorship from academics who’ve successfully launched their own start-ups and spinouts.

The compelling mix of entrepreneurial and scientific skills the course provides will stand you in excellent stead for launching your own venture, staying in research, or going on to work on drug design or development for a healthcare, biotech or pharmaceutical company.

What this course will give you

This one-year master’s brings together the science and commercialisation of medicines design and development into a single programme.

You’ll explore the full lifecycle of medicine design, from formulation to manufacture, while also building your business and management expertise - to give you the best possible foundation for launching and growing a successful pharmaceutical start-up.

  • Work with UCL’s renowned academics from across the pharmaceutical sciences, business and management, including many who’ve set up their own successful start-ups and spinouts. You’ll receive mentorship in best practice and learn how to overcome the main challenges involved in enterprises of this kind.
  • Gain a well-rounded set of skills in medicines design and entrepreneurship, not found in many other master’s.  
  • Build essential scientific knowledge in pharmaceutical materials, formulation science, safety and quality assurance, and pharmaceutical manufacture, as well as skills in novel therapeutics development, including the use of machine learning and AI. 
  • Build key skills in entrepreneurship, in areas such as business planning, evaluation of ideas and models, raising finance, allocating resources, marketing and communication.
  • Gain first-hand insight into globally-significant research underway in this field in areas like advanced pharmaceutical manufacturing (3D printing, nanofabrication, electrospinning), drug and biopharmaceutical delivery through biological barriers, pharmaceutical material characterisation, personalised medicine, nanomedicine and computational pharmaceutics.  
  • Spend three months working on a research project. During this time, you’ll join the research team of one of our world-leading academics, pursuing research that will advance the progress of contemporary medicine design.
  • Benefit from our close links with pharmaceutical companies, including options for some students to complete a research project in industry.

The foundation of your career

As well as expertise across all the relevant sciences that feed into medicines design, development and manufacture, you’ll hone essential business and entrepreneurship skills that will make you highly sought after in the global jobs market.

Employability

The unique mix of theory and practical skills in both areas of science (including computational pharmaceutics, data science, biologics and gene therapies) and entrepreneurship, will put you in a strong position for a career in medicine development, or research.  

By the end of the course, you’ll be equipped to embark on your own venture and can tap into advice and training from UCL Innovation & Enterprise to support you with this. Alternatively, you could take your expertise into a small biotech company, or a major pharmaceutical company.  

Other graduates decide to stay in academia and work on research, work in consulting or join world-leading technology companies where there’s an increasing emphasis on healthcare and the life sciences.  

You could take your expertise into product development, manufacturing, clinical trials or regulatory affairs. You could also go on to a PhD looking at the design of new drug delivery systems.

Accreditation

In 2025 the MSc Pharmaceutics and MSc Pharmaceutical Formulation & Entrepreneurship degrees were fully accredited by the Royal Society of Chemistry for a period of five years as meeting the requirements for Further Learning for registration as a Chartered Chemist. RSC accreditation provides students and employers with the confidence that they have achieved the standards necessary to be considered professional chemists. Teaching and learning

The course is delivered through a combination of lectures, tutorials, seminars and practical sessions, as well as industrial visits.

Assessment will be through a combination of written examinations, coursework assignments and project work.

You will receive approximately 8-15 contact hours a week during term time. Typically, the hours for self-directed studies are around 10 hours a week of study time for each 15-credit module in each semester.

This time includes activities that take place in in-person contexts such as on-campus lectures, seminars, tutorials, labs, studios and workshops, as well as tutor-mediated activities that take place in online environments.

Students undertake modules to the value of 180 credits. Upon successful completion of 180 credits, you will be awarded an MSc in Pharmaceutical Formulation and Entrepreneurship.
