Materials for Energy and Environment MSc

The global challenges of climate and energy require new technologies for renewable energy sources, methods of energy storage, efficient energy use, techniques for carbon capture and storage, climate engineering, as well as an appreciation of the impact of these on the environment. This is a broad-based MSc, ideal for you if you wish to acquire skills in energy and materials chemistry in order to participate in the emerging challenges to meet climate change targets.

A minimum of a upper second-class Bachelor's degree in a relevant discipline from a UK university or an overseas qualification of an equivalent standard.

About this degree

Taught modules are delivered through a mixture of lectures, workshops and tutorials. These modules will enhance your subject knowledge in materials science, and chemistry as applied to the areas of energy, and environment, and also develop your transferrable and professional skills.

You will undertake modules to the value of 180 credits across a variety of key disciplines.

The programme consists of core literature (30 credits) and research project (90 credits) modules and also taught modules (60 credits).

Upon successful completion of 180 credits, you will be awarded a MSc in Materials for Energy and Environment.

Compulsory modules

Students take all of the following, totalling 150 credits, including a 90-credit research dissertation.

  • Advanced Topics in Energy and Environmental Science
  • Transferable Skills for Scientists
  • Masters Literature Project (30 credits)
  • Research Project (90 credits)

Optional modules

Students take a total of 30 credits (2 optional modules) drawn from the following:

  • New Directions in Materials Chemistry
  • Climate and Energy
  • Materials and Energy Materials
Covid-19 module updates
Due to COVID-19, there may be updates to the modules for your chosen programme of study this year. Some modules may not be available or may need to be moved to a later term or year of study.  We have included these updates below:   New Directions in Materials Chemistry (CHEM0039) is now an optional module. Advanced Experimental Skills for Materials Scientists (CHEM0063) is suspended. Materials for Energy and Environment Literature Review (CHEM0051) has been replaced with Masters Literature Project (CHEM0040). Transferable Skills for Scientists (CHEM0072) will be available as a new, core module in terms 1, 2 and 3. These updates are relevant for 2020-21 academic year only.  The full list of modules will be available in the module catalogue from late August.  From the first week of September, you will be invited to complete module selection from Portico, our student record system. There may need to be additional updates or changes to modules during the academic year to allow for new guidance from the UK Government and Public Health England. Your department shall keep you updated of these changes as they become available.  

Dissertation/report

All MSc students undertake an independent research project which features an interim oral presentationa and viva, and a dissertation of approximately 7,000-10,000 words (90 credits).

Teaching and learning

The programme is delivered through a combination of lectures, seminars, self-study and research supervision. Assessment is through unseen written examination and coursework. The literature project is assessed by written dissertation and the research project is assessed by a written report and your supervisor.

Covid-19 contact hours on campus
In Term One, while campus will be open, all the learning activity for the core content of your modules will take place online – including lectures, tutorials, seminars and assessments. By “core content” we mean everything you need to learn to complete the module successfully. In addition to these online contact hours, we will be offering some face-to-face educational activities for students on campus, and we will provide alternative online activities for those students unable to join us on campus. These activities, which will include contact with academic staff, will be relevant to your programme of study may include seminars, academic and employability skills workshops, small-group or individual tutorials, lab and practice-based teaching. UK Government safety guidelines will limit the amount of ‘in person’ activity we can offer and while it will vary from programme to programme, is likely to be no more than 1-2 hours per week. This will vary across departments, particularly if your programme includes laboratory/practical/studio/workshop sessions. You will be updated with more specific details as they are available and your timetable will indicate which sessions will be on campus and which will be available online.
Covid-19 assessment updates
There may be changes to the format of assessments for modules in this programme due to COVID-19. These will be summarised for each module on the module catalogue from 17 August 2020.   If any changes to assessments need to be made during the academic year due to updates in government guidance, these will be communicated to you as soon as possible from your department.    
Communicating further Covid-19 mitigation plans
We are continuing to follow UK Government guidance, as well as the expertise of our researchers, including specialists in health, education, human behaviour and infection prevention, to make sure UCL is as safe as possible during the COVID-19 pandemic. If it becomes necessary to make further changes to your programme as a result of new guidance/regulations, UCL and your department will communicate these as soon as this becomes clear. Careers

The UK has committed to 80% reduction in CO2 emissions on a 1990 baseline by 2050. CERES, the organisation that represents the largest institutional investors would like to see 90% reduction by 2050. National Systems of Innovation (NSI), which includes the universities, research centres and government departments working in conjunction with industry, will need to apprehend new opportunities and change direction, diverting personnel to energy and climate issues in response to changing markets and legislation. This MSc will contribute to the supply of personnel needed for the era of sustainability.

Why study this degree at UCL?

This programme is designed for graduates from a wide range of science and engineering backgrounds who wish to broaden their knowledge and skills into materials science with an emphasis on the energy and climate change issues that will drive markets over the next century. It delivers courses from five departments across three faculties depending on options and includes a self-managed research project which is intended to introduce the challenges of original scientific research in a supportive environment.

Research activities span the whole spectrum of energy-related research from the development of batteries and fuel cells to the prediction of the structure of new water-splitting catalytic materials.

Students develop experience in scientific method, techniques for reporting science and in the many transferrable skills required for a future career.

This MSc offers science and engineering graduates with a strong chemistry background the opportunity to expand into materials science and is suitable for materials graduates who intend to focus on energy and climate-related careers.

NOTE: for applicants holding a UCL Chemistry or Natural Science Batchelors’ degree, the choice of a Master’s programme must not include one which requires modules previously studied at UCL - contact the Programme Director before applying.
