Entry requirements

Applicants must possess an approved undergraduate dental qualification (i.e. BDS, or equivalent from a recognised institution) and have a minimum of one year clinical experience post-qualification.

The English language level for this programme is: Level 3

UCL Pre-Master's and Pre-sessional English courses are for international students who are aiming to study for a postgraduate degree at UCL. The courses will develop your academic English and academic skills required to succeed at postgraduate level.

The full-time and part-time versions of this programme are taught primarily online with some teaching taking place on campus in London. As such, international students who apply to this programme are not eligible to apply for a regular Student visa for full-time study in the UK.

To attend the on-campus teaching sessions for this course, international students will ordinarily use a UK Standard Visitor visa for study.

About this degree


The field of modern implant dentistry is constantly evolving. Dentists must face challenges that require new skills as well as meeting high patient expectations. Our implant dentistry programme provides the foundational skills to treat patients with dental implants and create opportunities for rewarding careers.

The PG Cert teaches you to describe and perform the surgical steps involved in the guided placement of a dental implant. You will learn how to plan, restore and maintain implants for straightforward, single unit cases. This mixed-mode course combines remote learning and tuition throughout the year with four sessions of two or three days on site in London (usually in October, December, February, and April).

This route is for overseas students, who are eligible for the PG Certificate programme only. Any UK dentists wishing to study the PG Certificate Implant Dentistry should apply for the MSc programme and exit after the first year.

Who this course is for

The implant dentistry programme is ideal for dental practitioners wishing to develop their practice, improve their job satisfaction, and to offer patients a higher level of implant care. It is best suited to those with little or no experience in Implant dentistry.

The PG Cert programme is available by blended learning for overseas students. UK-based dentists should apply via the MSc Implant Dentistry programme and, if preferred, exit the programme after meeting the requirements for the PG Cert Implant Dentistry.

The foundation of your career

This programme enables dentists to bring implant dentistry into their everyday practice. Students should be able to embark on implant treatment in their own practices during the programme. Graduates will gain the skills for dental implant case selection and the planning, surgery, and restoration of straightforward implant cases.

Employability

The programme provides the skills to be able to restore implant supported restorations and to work closely with an implant surgeon for joint implant planning and treatment of implant patients. This will bring increased opportunities for working in private dental practice or to continue onto further study.

Networking

There are regular networking opportunities, including events where you can hear from expert speakers. We encourage students to broaden their skills and expand their networks by attending and participating at conferences.

Teaching and learning

The programme is delivered through a series of remote webinars and interactive lectures, seminars, workshops, and live/video surgery in state-of-the-art skills laboratories.

Students also spend four residential sessions in London which consist of two or three days of face-to-face teaching.

During attendance days, you will engage in hands-on practical skills work to develop your practical and transferable skills. You will receive personal feedback and engage in a consolidation and feedback session with your peers.

Throughout the programme, you will be assessed by a variety of methods, including unseen written examinations, multiple choice questions (MCQ), short answer questions, in-class essays, practical lab exercises and presentations (PowerPoint, video). You will receive written and verbal feedback for the summative assessments to further your learning along the programme.

Clinical case presentations and reflective portfolios are formative assessments, where candidates gather evidence over their day-to-day practice of clinical dentistry in relation to the patients they treat, and the reflective qualitative learning that has taken place.

The PG Cert programme requires approximately 600 learning hours to complete.

You will have around 30 contact teaching days for this programme. These are split into approximately 20 days of hybrid synchronous teaching and four residential blocks of two or three days on face-to-face teaching on site in London. These sessions usually take place in October, December, February, and April.

Modules

In this one-year programme, you will complete three compulsory modules worth 60 credits.

  • DENT0033 Implant Planning
  • DENT0034 Implant Science I
  • DENT0035 Implant Prosthodontics

The programme has up to 30 contact days. Of these, approximately 20 days are hybrid synchronous teaching.

There are also four residential blocks (usually in October, December, February, and April) consisting of two or three days of face-to-face teaching on site.

Students undertake modules to the value of 60 credits. Upon successful completion of 60 credits, you will be awarded a PG Cert in Implant Dentistry.

Travel and accommodation

  • Students must meet the costs of coming to campus in London and accommodation (if required) during the campus-based teaching blocks. We have some guidance on the cost of living in London, while transport costs can be found at Transport for London.

Costs related to implant treatment

  • Computer hardware for digital implant planning (approx. £2,000). These costs can be passed to the patient if required.
