Health, Wellbeing and Sustainable Buildings MSc

This programme builds upon the ever-increasing professional and research interest in the sector. It equips professionals with the skills, knowledge and networks needed to drive sustainable innovation for health and wellbeing in the design, retrofit and operation of buildings. Based at The Bartlett, the UCL Institute for Environmental Design and Engineering (UCL IEDE) is a world-leading research and learning centre.

Full-time students study for 37.5 hours per week during term time. Typically, lectures and seminars occur on two days per week. Flexible mode students normally attend half this amount.

Entry requirements

Normally a second-class UK Bachelor's degree in a relevant discipline (e.g. architecture, engineering, physics and other relevant disciplines such as built environment or public health) is required, or an overseas qualification of an equivalent standard.

For applicants without a first degree, but with relevant and substantial work experience in the field, a special qualifying examination may be set. Details may be obtained by contacting the Bartlett’s Graduate Faculty Office.

English language requirements

If your education has not been conducted in the English language, you will be expected to demonstrate evidence of an adequate level of English proficiency.

About this degree

During the programme you will:

  • examine the built environment's impacts on health and wellbeing, within the context of sustainability
  • master key design, engineering and public health principles
  • use tools applicable in professional practice, including: standards, benchmarking, modelling and monitoring methods
  • understand the factors affecting the business case for healthy and productive sustainable buildings

Students undertake modules to the value of 180 credits.

The programme consists of six core modules (90 credits), two optional modules (30 credits) and a dissertation report (60 credits).

A Postgraduate Diploma (120 credits - full-time 9 months or modular/flexible 2-5 years) is offered. The programme consists of eight modules (15 credits each).

A Postgraduate Certificate (60 credits - full-time 4-7 months or modular/flexible 2-5 years) is offered. The programme consists of four modules (15 credits each).

Upon successful completion of 180 credits, you will be awarded a MSc in Health, Wellbeing and Sustainable Buildings. Upon successful completion of 120 credits, you will be awarded a PG Dip in Health, Wellbeing and Sustainable Buildings. Upon successful completion of 60 credits, you will be awarded a PG Cert in Health, Wellbeing and Sustainable Buildings.

  • Health and Wellbeing in Cities: Theory and Practice (15 credits)
  • Indoor Air Quality in Buildings (15 credits)
  • Integrated Building Design for Health, Comfort and Wellbeing (15 credits)
  • Methods of Environmental Analysis (15 credits)
  • Wellbeing in Buildings: Theory and Practice (15 credits)

In addition to core modules, student learning is supported via supplementary activities including: dedicated tutorials for specialised software, case study visits, a residential field visit, an introduction to building physics, and opportunities to attend selected events with international experts.

Students choose two of the following:

  • Building Acoustics (15 credits)
  • Designing Inclusive Places (15 credits)
  • Light, Lighting and Wellbeing in Buildings (15 credits)
Covid-19 module updates
Due to COVID-19, there may be updates to the modules for your chosen programme of study this year. Some modules may not be available or may need to be moved to a later term or year of study. These updates are relevant for 2020-21 academic year only.  The full list of modules will be available in the module catalogue from late August.  From the first week of September, you will be invited to complete module selection from Portico, our student record system. There may need to be additional updates or changes to modules during the academic year to allow for new guidance from the UK Government and Public Health England. Your department shall keep you updated of these changes as they become available.

Dissertation/report

MSc students undertake an independent research project culminating in a 10,000-word report (60 credits).

The dissertation is an excellent opportunity to deepen your interest or expertise in a specific topic, via research with dedicated tutor support.

Fieldwork

The programme includes case study visits. Fieldwork activity may be required for selected coursework – if so this is likely to take place within the Greater London area. 


Covid-19 field trip updates
Due to COVID-19 updates, there may need to be changes to planned field trips for this programme. This will depend on travel restrictions, social distancing measures, and the availability of the relevant venues. Your department will keep you updated if field trips are able to occur and/or any alternative options available.

Teaching and learning

The programme is delivered through a combination of lectures, seminars, interactive workshops, tutorials and lab demos. Assessment is through coursework, design reports, written examinations and a dissertation.

Covid-19 contact hours on campus
In Term One, while campus will be open, all the learning activity for the core content of your modules will take place online – including lectures, tutorials, seminars and assessments. By “core content” we mean everything you need to learn to complete the module successfully. In addition to these online contact hours, we will be offering some face-to-face educational activities for students on campus, and we will provide alternative online activities for those students unable to join us on campus. These activities, which will include contact with academic staff, will be relevant to your programme of study may include seminars, academic and employability skills workshops, small-group or individual tutorials, lab and practice-based teaching. UK Government safety guidelines will limit the amount of ‘in person’ activity we can offer and while it will vary from programme to programme, is likely to be no more than 1-2 hours per week. This will vary across departments, particularly if your programme includes laboratory/practical/studio/workshop sessions. You will be updated with more specific details as they are available and your timetable will indicate which sessions will be on campus and which will be available online.
Covid-19 practical component updates
Due to COVID-19, there may be changes to the availability of the practical components for your chosen programme. Any updates relate only to the 20/21 academic year and may not apply to all students across the programme depending on your year of study.  Your department will keep you updated if the practical component of your programme is able to occur and/or any alternative options available.   There may need to be additional updates or changes to the practical component during the academic year to allow for new guidance from the UK Government and/or Public Health England. Your department shall keep you updated of these changes as they become available. 
Covid-19 assessment updates
There may be changes to the format of assessments for modules in this programme due to COVID-19. These will be summarised for each module on the module catalogue from 17 August 2020.   If any changes to assessments need to be made during the academic year due to updates in government guidance, these will be communicated to you as soon as possible from your department.    
Communicating further Covid-19 mitigation plans
We are continuing to follow UK Government guidance, as well as the expertise of our researchers, including specialists in health, education, human behaviour and infection prevention, to make sure UCL is as safe as possible during the COVID-19 pandemic. If it becomes necessary to make further changes to your programme as a result of new guidance/regulations, UCL and your department will communicate these as soon as this becomes clear. Additional costs

Travel, accommodation and activities for the residential field visit is free. Travel costs for site visits or fieldwork within the Greater London area (transport for London zones 1-6) which is accessible by public transport is covered by students. Otherwise, travel is covered by the programme.

Careers

Students taking this programme may work in architectural or engineering companies, and specialist consultancies dedicated to the design and/or evaluation of sustainable buildings, with a strong focus on health and wellbeing.

Additional career paths may be: within in-house building design and operational teams, in relevant public sector agencies or government departments, or in specialist product or service innovation companies.

The MSc can also provide a foundation for MPhil or PhD research.

Graduates from our first cohort have found employment in leading organisations ranging from Delos in China to Samoo Architects & Engineers in South Korea, the Shenzen Institute of Building Research, to PhD roles at universities including UCL.

Employability

Students gain hands-on experience of monitoring environmental conditions, gathering and evaluating human responses to the environment, applying industry standards, and simulation tools similar to those used by commercial companies for building performance evaluation.

Successful graduates will understand how to communicate to different stakeholders and develop the business case for improved health, wellbeing and productivity in buildings. Our Advisory Group of industry experts has helped us shape a curriculum with employability in mind.

As awareness increases of the impacts that the built environment can have on health, wellbeing and sustainability, so too does the demand for professionals with relevant expertise.
